Description
Perma-Pipe in Lebanon, TN is hiring a Welding Supervisor!
We’re looking for a dependable and motivated Welding Supervisor team member to oversee day-to-day welding operations within the pipe fabrication facility, ensure work is performed safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with applicable codes, standards, and quality requirements. This role provides technical leadership, training, and support to a team of 5–15 welders, ensuring consistent adherence to welding procedures, productivity targets, and customer specifications. The ideal candidate combines hands-on expertise with strong leadership and communication skills to drive continuous improvement across welding quality and performance.
Essential Job Functions:
- Supervise a team of welders performing various types of pipe and structural welds (GTAW, SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, etc.).
- Plan, assign, and coordinate daily work activities to meet project deadlines and production schedules.
- Provide on-the-job coaching, mentoring, and feedback to welders to ensure skill development and consistent performance.
- Monitor compliance with safety, quality, and procedural requirements.
- Collaborate with Quality Assurance and Production teams to resolve welding-related issues and prevent rework.
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure all welding is performed in accordance with ASME, AWS, and company welding procedures.
- Support the implementation and maintenance of the Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR).
- Conduct visual inspections and coordinate with Quality Inspectors and the Quality Manager to verify weld integrity.
- Assist in managing welder performance qualification tests and maintain welder continuity records.
- Enforce adherence to company and customer quality standards.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to enhance productivity, efficiency, and weld quality.
- Participate in root cause analyses for weld-related defects or nonconformances.
- Support Lean/6S initiatives and continuous improvement programs within the shop.
- Recommend and assist in the evaluation of new welding technologies, equipment, or processes.
Safety
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture in all welding and fabrication operations.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA standards and internal safety procedures.
- Participate in safety audits, toolbox talks, and incident investigations as required.
- Communicate clearly with team members and supervisors to ensure workflow efficiency.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Strong work ethic with the ability to follow directions and prioritize tasks.
- Safety-conscious and reliable; must follow all company safety guidelines and PPE requirements.
- Flexibility to work varied shifts, weekends, or on-call assignments as required.
Experience:
- Strong technical understanding of welding processes, metallurgy, and fabrication practices.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret blueprints, weld maps, and technical drawings.
- Effective leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with MS Office and familiarity with ERP systems (e.g., Syteline or equivalent).
- Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Work is performed in a fabrication shop environment with exposure to heat, noise, fumes, and moving equipment.
- Must be able to stand, walk, and perform inspections for extended periods.
- Use of appropriate PPE required at all times.
Typical Reporting Structure
- Reports To: Quality Manager
- Direct Reports: 5–15 Welders and/or Welding Leads
- Key Internal Contacts: Production, Quality Assurance, Engineering, and Maintenance
Physical Demands
- Remain on feet for extended periods of time.
- Ability to respond quickly to sounds.
- Must move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.
- Visual acuity required for accuracy and thoroughness of work.
- Standing/walking for more than 90% of shift, including long distances.
- Ability to work in extreme weather.
Work Environment:
- Active industrial shop with exposure to dust, noise, varying temperatures, and heavy machinery.
- Frequent use of PPE including gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, and dust masks as required.
Education & Experience:
- Associate degree or technical school training in Welding Technology, Manufacturing, or related field preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline a plus.
- Minimum of 5 years of welding experience in pipe fabrication, with at least 2–3 years in a supervisory or lead role.
- CWI (Certified Welding Inspector) certification preferred.
- Familiarity with ASME Section IX, B31.1/B31.3, and AWS D1.1 standards.
- Proven experience leading teams in a fabrication or manufacturing environment.
