Welding Supervisor Job Description
Job Summary
The Welding Supervisor oversees daily welding and fabrication operations, ensuring high-quality production, safe work practices, and efficient workflow. This role specializes in MIG welding processes, fabrication standards, inspection compliance, and team supervision within a metal manufacturing or fabrication environment.
Key Responsibilities
Production & Supervision
- Supervise welders, fabricators, and shop personnel during daily operations.
- Assign work schedules and prioritize fabrication tasks to meet production deadlines.
- Monitor workflow efficiency and reduce production downtime.
- Coordinate with engineering, production, and quality departments.
MIG Welding Oversight
- Supervise and support MIG welding operations on carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum components.
- Ensure proper welding parameters, consumables, and techniques are used.
- Review welding procedures and verify compliance with welding specifications and drawings.
- Train welders on MIG welding techniques, joint preparation, and distortion control.
Metal Fabrication
- Oversee fabrication activities including cutting, grinding, fitting, assembly, and finishing.
- Interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, and welding symbols.
- Ensure fabricated parts meet dimensional tolerances and customer specifications.
- Coordinate material handling and fabrication sequencing for optimal productivity.
Quality Control
- Conduct visual weld inspections and support quality assurance processes.
- Ensure compliance with welding codes, standards, and customer requirements.
- Identify welding defects and implement corrective actions.
- Work closely with QA/QC personnel to improve weld quality and reduce rework.
- Experience supporting external audits and certification bodies (EN 1090, ISO 3834).
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce workplace safety policies and PPE requirements.
- Ensure welding equipment is maintained and operated safely.
- Maintain compliance with OSHA and company safety procedures.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or technical/vocational certification in welding or fabrication preferred.
- 8+ years of MIG welding and metal fabrication experience.
- 5+ years of supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of welding symbols, blueprints, and fabrication processes.
- Experience with welding inspection and quality standards.
- Ability to use measuring tools and inspection equipment.
Preferred Skills
- AWS welding certifications preferred.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement practices.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with fabrication shop equipment and maintenance procedures.
Working Conditions
- Manufacturing or fabrication shop environment.
- Exposure to, heat, noise, and heavy equipment.
- Ability to stand for long periods and lift materials when required.
Performance Goals
- Improve weld quality and reduce rework rates.
- Maintain on-time production schedules.
- Increase fabrication efficiency and material utilization.
