Job Title: Fitter-Welder

Reports to: Shop Foreman-Mechanical

Department: Manufacturing

Job Classification: Non-Exempt

Main Function: The Fitter-Welder is responsible for fabricating and assembling structural and machine components. This role requires performing SMAW (stick), FCAW (flux core), or GTAW (TIG) welding, simple fabrications, and repairs of various components and types/grades of steel in accordance with AWS code requirements.

Education and Experience:

Education:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Ability to read drawings, schematics, and blueprints.
  • Knowledge of machinery, equipment, and tools.
  • Familiarity with AWS D1.1 and AWS D14.1.
  • Knowledge of machinery, equipment, tools including their design, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Strong Math skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations Required:

  • Certification in processes according to AWS-D1.1/D14.1 and American Crane welding specification preferred.

Job Description:

Essential Duties:

  • Read blueprints. Tacks and burns. Fabricates simple items without supervision.
  • Fabricates standard trolleys, end trucks, cabs, lower blocks, and upper blocks under supervision.
  • Interpret machining and surface information and have knowledge of shrinkage and expansion of metal.
  • Use required math to do fitting.
  • Set welding machines and perform welding process in compliance with appropriate welding procedures (amperage, voltage, shielding gas flow rate, maintaining proper pre-heat/inter-pass temperatures, etc.).
  • Select correct type and size filler material for applicable materials as specified on drawings.
  • Produce acceptable welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.
  • Remove or repair unacceptable welds using carbon arc gouging or grinding to correct defects.
  • Operate cranes, forklifts, and other material handling equipment.
  • Keep immediate area safe, clean, and organized.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Effort:

  • Ability to climb access and extension ladders.
  • Ability to work comfortably and safely at varying heights.
  • Ability to work a minimum of full-time hours; overtime required based on Manufacturing Plant schedule.
  • Hand/eye coordination is necessary to operate tools, equipment, and machinery.
  • Occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to touch; reach with hands and arms; grasp with fingers.
  • Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear; smell.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds; must be able to perform rigging tasks to prepare material heavier than 50 pounds for transport using overhead cranes.

Work Environment:

  • Ability to work near moving mechanical parts and in precarious places.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration.
