Overview

Summary:

Welds together metal components of products such as Drilling Rigs, pipelines, pre-fabricated risers, vehicles, and heavy equipment with (SMAW) Shield Metal Arc Welding or (GTAW) Gas Tungsten Arc Welding, (GMAW) Gas Metal Arc Welding, Oxy-acetylene welding. Gather dimensions and lays them out on structural steel / high pressure piping. Rolls, offsets, miters, and “POP” are calculated to produce pre-fabricate finished goods. Fabrication / installation of conductor, Braiden-head, casing cut-offs, plug and abandon. Provides bill of material / ISO for installation of Compressors / pig launchers.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

Welding Preparation:  Obtains specified electrode, based on criteria of raw goods being welded; inserts electrode into rod holder or feeds wire consumable through welding gun. Attaches ground clamp from welding machine to work piece, to dial in the adequate amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse, to known standards. Start engine driven welding machine / electric welding machine to produce desired amps.  Scratch start arc to generate heat to produce a molten puddle, depositing filler metal from electrode to work piece; to join edges of work piece.  Preheats work piece with hand torch or heating furnace where applicable.  Positions and clamps work pieces together or assembles them in jig or fixture.  Tacks / welds assemblies together.

 

Welding: Manually guides electrode or gun along beveled or fillet edge, maintaining length of arc and speed to form specified depth of fusion, width, and convex of weld on welded fixture, visually judged by color of base metal i.e. stainless, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle. Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead on plate; 6G on 2 inch pipe and a butt and branch on 12 inch pipe.

 

Post Welding Duties:  Cleans slag of weld joint. Visually examines weld on i.e. bead size, bead crown convex/concave, porosity, and undercut according to AWS, ASME, API 1104 welding specifications. Repairs out of code equipment/raw goods, i.e. broken, cracked parts and fills cavity. Prepares parts for non-destructive testing (NDT); chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter.

Education and/or Experience                                                  

One year certificate from college or technical school; minimum of three years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Language Skills                                                              

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

 

Mathematical Skills                                                     

Ability to calculate figures such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

Reasoning Ability                                                          

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Welding certification is preferred.

Valid driver's license.

Hot work permit certification is a plus.

Forklift certification is a plus.

Other Qualifications     

Must be open to working weekends and being on-call when needed.

Understanding of the Measuring Tape, Material Grade, Alloys, Miter Cuts, Fitting take-offs and interpretation of Blue Prints.

Understanding of Fittings and Layouts using the Pipefitters criteria.

Layout of Risers and Headers.

Oversee installation and completion of project assigned.

Must participate and successfully complete the Smith Driver’s Training system taught in house.

Insurance requirements.
