Welder / Fabricator - Small Parts

Position Summary

The Small Parts Fabricator is responsible for fitting, fabricating, repairing, and finishing a variety of metal parts used in the manufacture of vessels and vessel accessories. This position performs a combination of fabrication, welding, grinding, equipment operation, and inspection activities while working from blueprints and established specifications. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate grinding equipment and perform dye-check inspections to identify weld defects.
  • Perform touch-up work and blast parts in preparation for enamel coating.
  • Prepare parts for fit-up using equipment such as a nibbler and bug torch.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and layout information.
  • Operate equipment including bandsaws, drill presses, cover trimmers, spinners, and furnace presses.
  • Use appropriate fixtures to form parts and manufacture shafts.
  • Fit and tack a variety of components using layout tools, cutting torches, and applicable fixtures.
  • Perform grinding, small-head layout, nozzle swaging, trimming, and other fabrication operations as required.
  • Operate a lift truck/stacker as needed within the Parts Accessories Group.
  • Identify and help resolve production and quality issues with minimal supervision.
  • Follow established safety procedures and company safety policies. 

Qualifications

  • 3 to 5 years of manufacturing welding and/or fabrication experience preferred.
  • Experience with 2G and 3G open-root TIG, flux-cored wire, and Pulse MIG welding.
  • Ability to successfully complete required horizontal and vertical welding tests.
  • Strong blueprint-reading, layout, and shop math skills.
  • Ability to safely operate fabrication tools and equipment.
  • Machining experience is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Ability to receive and follow instructions and communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers.
  • Ability to troubleshoot production and quality issues with limited supervision.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment and following established safety requirements. 

Required Testing

Candidates must successfully complete applicable pre-employment skills testing, which may include:

  • Basic shop math
  • Radial and circumference calculations
  • Layout and welding knowledge
  • Horizontal and vertical welding tests
  • Code weld test

A calculator may be used for the written assessment.
