Job summary:

The main responsibility of the welder will be to fabricate steel products which include a variety of ASME pressure vessels, related pressure rated and non-pressure rated accessories, and some structural items related to vessel production.

Primary functions and duties:

  • Follow and enforce strict safety regulations such as wearing safety glasses, heat-resistant gloves, protective masks, and safety shoes.
  • Maintain equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety.
  • Interpret blueprints, drawings, and measurements to plan layouts.
  • Interpret typical welding symbols and apply the correct weld to workpiece.
  • Use specialized machinery for industrial welding and oversee machines that perform the same job.
  • Use standard hand tools and power tools for fabrication and manufacturing, i.e. grinders, hammers, drill presses, metal workers, 
  • Assess welded surfaces, structures, and components to identify errors.
  • Must be able to set up a welding machine (both semi-auto and manual machines) to operate within the parameters of an approved WPS.
  • Monitor machinery for appropriate usage and temperature.
  • Must be able to weld in all positions.  2G, 3G, and 5G including fillet welds.
  • Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment.
  • Will be required to visually inspect welds and make proper corrections without, or with minimal supervision.

The ideal candidate will possess the following: 

  • Read blueprints
  • Read and understand measurements 
  • Layout and fit various vessel and piping related components.
  • Operate an overhead crane
  • Understand and perform welding with the following processes: GMAW (MIG), FCAW (FLUXCORE), and SAW (SUBARC)
  • Must pass a drug test and background check
  • Lift up to 50 lbs
  • Must have pulsed mig welding experience

Weld Test Requirements:

  • Candidates must pass a test on super coupon, 2 7/8” dia, 10” in length, in the 6G position.
  • The test will include an open root with a maximum 1/8” opening.
  • GMAW-S will be used in the downhill direction to fill the root, followed by feathering for a hot pass using FCAW.
  • FCAW will be utilized for all passes from the hot pass to the cap in the 3G uphill position. Visual inspections should be performed between passes to remove slag and ensure no rollover is present.
  • The cap must be completed with stringer beads, without weaving, allowing slight oscillation to manage heat and speed.

Cap visual inspection must meet the following criteria:

  • Maximum reinforcement: 3/16”
  • No undercut exceeding 1/32”
  • No cold laps, roll over, or visible imperfections at the toe of the weld
  • No slag inclusion, cracks, or porosity

If the test plate passes visual inspection, it will proceed to Ultrasonic Testing (UT) for volumetric assessment.
