Summary
Set up and operate welding machines to weld and mass-produce component parts of fabricated metal products per blueprints, layouts, welding procedures, or instructions. Join metal components using methods including MIG welding, robot welding, and spot welding. Read and interpret weld symbols and engineering drawings to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations.
- Insert electrode into holder or thread consumable wire through welding gun; connect cables to obtain correct amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse
- Start power supply, strike arc, and manually guide electrode or gun along weld line to form specified depth of fusion and bead
- Position, clamp, and assemble work pieces in jigs or fixtures; tack assemblies as needed
- Heat, form, and dress metal parts using hand tools, torch, or arc welding equipment
- Measure part dimensions to verify accuracy of machine operation
- Operate additional machine shop equipment to prepare components for welding
- Follow all safety procedures at all times
- Perform related duties as assigned by supervision
Minimum qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- 6 months to 1 year of related experience and/or vocational training, or experience in a metal fabrication shop
- Ability to speak and read English
- Consistently meet weld quality standards
- Knowledge of MIG, stainless steel, carbon steel, and aluminum welding
- Experience with automated welding where applicable
- Must supply own hand tools
