Role Purpose: Responsible for fitting and welding of steel, aluminium and stainless-steel parts using a MIG and/or TIG process.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Reads and interprets blueprints and machine drawings to determine specific welding requirements, layout, and procedures.
  • Set up components for welding according to specifications (e.g. cut material with powered saws to match measurements).
  • Operate angle grinders to prepare the parts that must be welded.
  • Align components using calipers, rulers etc. and clamp pieces.
  • Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions (vertical, horizontal, or overhead).
  • Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Grind or clean weld joint of work piece.
  • Examines weld for bead size and other specifications.
  • Repairs broken or cracked parts and fills holes.
  • Positions and clamps work pieces together or assembles them in jig or fixtures.
  • Selects torch, torch tip, filler ford and flux, according to welding chart specifications or type and thickness of material.
  • Tacks assemblies together.
  • Chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter.
  • Cleans or de-greases parts.
  • Performs all necessary maintenance and repair on all equipment used in welding.
  • Be able to move parts in and move finished product out of welding area.
  • Follow all safety rules and quality standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Critical Competencies

  • Ability to perform simple shop math, convert decimals to factional equivalents and fractions to decimal equivalents.
  • Ability to stand continuously for long periods of time.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, quality manuals and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to read blueprints.

Education and/or Experience:

  • 3 years related experience and/or training.
  • Associate degree or equivalent from two-year College or trade school preferred.
  • Professional Certification (e.g. an AWS welding certificate) is a plus.
