The Weekend Engineering Area Manager leads all Engineering and Maintenance support activities at the Takeda Los Angeles site during weekends and holidays. This role serves as the single point of contact for Manufacturing during assigned coverage, ensuring the safe, compliant, and reliable operation of manufacturing, utility, and facility systems in a 24/7 GMP environment.
This position provides direct leadership to weekend swing and night maintenance supervisors and technicians, with strong dotted-line oversight of Automation, Critical Systems, Refrigeration, Facilities/ISS, and other on-call engineering resources. Acting under delegated authority from site engineering leadership, the role is responsible for real-time issue resolution, escalation, and coordination in alignment with Takeda’s Patient-Trust-Reputation-Business (PTRB) principles.
This role is critical to maintaining uninterrupted operations, protecting patient supply, and upholding Takeda’s standards for Safety, Quality, Compliance, and Reliability outside of standard business hours.
Serve as the primary Engineering and Maintenance leader on-site during weekends and holidays
Act as the single point of contact for Manufacturing on all engineering, maintenance, utilities, automation, and facility-related issues
Lead and develop weekend maintenance supervisors and technicians, ensuring clear priorities and accountability
Coordinate and direct cross-functional engineering resources through strong dotted-line leadership
Lead real-time troubleshooting across equipment, automation systems, utilities, and infrastructure to minimize downtime
Assess safety, quality, compliance, and operational risk; make timely, GMP-aligned decisions
Escalate issues appropriately and engage SMEs or site leadership as needed
Ensure systems are restored to a safe, stable, and fully operational condition before handoff to weekday teams
Enforce compliance with FDA, cGMP, EHS, GEP, and site procedures
Serve as the escalation point for safety incidents, environmental events, and GMP concerns
Drive urgency, accountability, and disciplined execution across weekend operations
Ensure effective shift handovers, documentation, and communication of risks and follow-ups
Provide concise updates to site leadership on critical events, risks, and recovery actions
Ensure thorough documentation of issues, actions taken, and outstanding items for follow-up
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical preferred); advanced degree (MBA/Master’s) a plus
6+ years of experience in engineering, maintenance, or technical operations
1+ year of leadership experience in a supervisory capacity
Proven leadership experience managing supervisors and technical teams in a manufacturing environment
Ability to lead cross-functional engineering teams through direct and dotted-line authority
Strong troubleshooting and decision-making skills in time-critical situations
Working knowledge of maintenance, automation, utilities, and facility systems
Solid understanding of cGMP, EHS, and regulatory requirements
Strong communication and coordination skills across Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and EHS
Proficiency in written and spoken English
Physical & Work Environment
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in both office and manufacturing environments
Frequent presence in manufacturing, utility, and facility areas
Ability to access electrical rooms, mezzanines, and confined spaces
Required use of PPE and adherence to gowning protocols in controlled environments
May work in cold, wet, or cleanroom environments
Must be able to support shift work, weekends, and holidays
Additional Requirements
Ability to respond to site emergencies outside normal business hours
Participation in weekend/holiday on-call coverage as required
Limited travel for training or business needs
Experience leading supervisors and technical teams in a 24/7 or off-shift environment
Experience in FDA-regulated, cGMP manufacturing environments
Background in biopharmaceutical or biotechnology manufacturing preferred
Demonstrated troubleshooting, incident response, or operational leadership experience

$116,000.00 - $182,270.00
The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors, including the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job. The actual base salary offered will be in accordance with state or local minimum wage requirements for the job location.
U.S. based employees may be eligible for short-term and/ or long-term incentives.
