Job Title: Waste water Treatment Plant Operator


Immediate Supervisor: Waste water Treatment Manager

Hours: 6PM - 2AM. Monday - Friday

Pay: $23-$32/ hour (Varies on experience)

Summary: The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for assigning, reviewing and participating in the day-to-day operations, mechanical maintenance and repairs of the plant wastewater treatment plant and facilities. Ensures plant is in compliance with state and federal requirements, represents plant operations with government control agencies, ensures work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures, coordinates assigned activities with other departments and outside company agencies, performs the more technical and complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans, assigns and participates in the operation of the Wastewater Treatment Facility.
  • Assists in the required activities of the laboratory testing or sampling for industry testing facilities.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with staff, municipal counterparts, and the general public.
  • Accurately records equipment and instrument data in a format as prescribed to include computer data entry.
  • Required to meet or exceed mandated water quality standards.
  • Responsible for consistently meeting the NPDES discharge permit requirements by maintaining and adjusting intricate and complex wastewater process controls, including programmable logic controllers, variable frequency drives, system controls and data acquisition for monitoring, mixing and adjusting , food/microorganism ratio and the chemical sterilization process.
  • Oversees the collecting, transporting and analysis of all wastewater samples.
  • Determines waste and return activated sludge rates by lab analysis results.
  • Analyzes all laboratory data to determine proper operational parameters.
  • Advises and recommends any needed alterations, extensions, improvement to the plant, equipment and processes.
  • Supervises the cleaning and routine maintenance of assigned facilities.
  • Performs visual and operational inspections of various facility, mechanical and electrical equipment located outdoors and with the various buildings and structures.
  • Collects biological samples of wastewater and bio-solids from various treatment stages and performs analyses utilizing standard laboratory equipment and standards.
  • Performs work with independent judgment and self-initiative to meet facility operating requirements and correct treatment process abnormalities.
  • Works with Plant Maintenance Manager on maintenance and operation to the wastewater collection system.
  • Assist in any other areas of the plant when necessary.

Qualification/Requirements:

  • Requires advanced knowledge of the processes and operations of wastewater treatment principles and practices and the ability to apply such knowledge in the operation of the plant.
  • Knowledge of mechanical equipment and preventative maintenance practices.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills both written and oral
  • Must be able to work with WHC team members at all levels within the WHC organization
  • Prefer fundamental skills with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Must be able to work in potentially hazardous environments.
  • Must be able to verbally communicate, understand, and write in the English language.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours as required.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, stand or walk for prolonged periods of time. The employee is required to use hands and fingers to operate, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms on a repetitive basis. The employee must be able to lift, bend, stoop, push/pull exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds frequently and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects. Requires visual acuity to review written documentations; ability to hear and understand speech. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. There is exposure to a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, and exposure to heat/cold temperature changes.
