Utility Technician (Sanitation & Janitorial)

Job Description:

As a Plant Utility Technician, you will be responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and organized facility by supporting janitorial, grounds, and general utility needs across the plant. Your work helps ensure the facility consistently reflects the high standards of one of Mueller’s most advanced operations.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Maintain cleanliness of production floors, breakrooms, restrooms, locker rooms, conference rooms, and office areas
  • Perform routine sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and trash removal throughout the facility
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, including replenishing paper products, soap, and other supplies
  • Perform basic grounds maintenance, including lawn care, landscaping upkeep, and maintaining cleanliness of parking lots, walkways, and exterior areas
  • Dispose of waste, scrap materials, and recyclables in accordance with plant procedures
  • Support production by cleaning workstations, equipment surfaces, and surrounding areas as needed
  • Identify and address spills, debris, or hazards to maintain a safe work environment
  • Assist with minor facility upkeep tasks such as replacing light bulbs, basic repairs, painting, or reporting maintenance issues
  • Operate cleaning equipment such as floor scrubbers, buffers, and pressure washers safely and effectively
  • Maintain inventory of janitorial supplies and notify supervisor when restocking is needed
  • Follow all safety policies, including proper use of PPE and chemical handling procedures
  • Support plant shutdown or deep-clean activities on a scheduled basis
  • Assist other departments with general utility needs as directed

Required Skills:

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness and organization
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and properly handle cleaning chemicals
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for operating cleaning equipment
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong work ethic and reliability in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively
  • Good communication skills and ability to work with cross-functional teams
  • Willingness to take direction and adapt to changing priorities

Required Education/Experience:

  • Must have high school diploma/GED or equivalent work experience.
  • 1+ year of janitorial, custodial, or industrial cleaning experience preferred
  • Experience working in a manufacturing or industrial environment is a plus

Preferred:

  • Prior experience supporting production environments
  • Forklift certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Familiarity with industrial cleaning equipment and chemicals preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including, but not limited to, safety glasses, steel-toed or metatarsal-guarded shoes, and/or ear plugs, while working in an industrial and/or manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to use hands to handle, feel, or manipulate objects with fingers.
  • Ability to frequently sit, stand, walk, and reach within hands and/or arm’s length.
  • Ability to frequently stoop, kneel, and crouch.
  • Ability to occasionally reach overhead or at or below shoulder level.
  • Ability to ascend or descend ladders or steps in confined spaces, as required by work area.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects between 25 and 50 pounds in weight in all directions.
  • Ability to remain in stationary or standing position for prolonged periods and to alternate between positions as necessary.
  • Ability to repeat gross or fine manipulation that may include the use of wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Ability to perform close visual inspections of products, which may include specific vision requirements.
  • Ability to clearly see pedestrians and objects, which may include specific vision requirements.
  • Ability to work in an open warehouse environment, subject to seasonal weather (hot/cold).
  • Ability to climb and operate on catwalks, ladders, equipment, etc.
  • Ability to safely operate standing and sit-down power industrial trucks (PIT), and other similar and advanced industrial equipment. Operation may include operating equipment at heights.
  • Ability to correctly wear a PAPR/respirator when work requires.
  • Ability to fit, crawl, and maneuver into small and awkward places when needed.
