Job Summary
The primary function of the Third Engineer is to operate all equipment and support systems related to high pressure steam boilers, electric power generation (cogeneration), process cooling, compressed air, wastewater treatment and other systems as assigned in the Utilities Department.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Operate, monitor and inspect high pressure steam boilers, electric generators, air compressors, process cooling water, water treatment systems and associated auxiliary equipment including pumps, valves, transmitters, gauges, alarms, and safety devices to detect malfunctions and to ensure that equipment is operating reliably, efficiently and safely
Maintain daily logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activities, including test results, instrument readings, and details of equipment malfunctions and maintenance in order to demonstrate regulatory compliance at all times.
Maintain continuous compliance with local, state and federal regulations as they relate to air quality, water quality and safety
Maintain required amounts of water in boilers, adjust supplies of combustion air, and to control the flow of fuel into burners
Test water quality and take necessary corrective action to maintain proper chemical conditions for steam generation, process cooling and wastewater systems
Observe and interpret readings on gauges, meters, and charts registering various aspects of boiler operation to ensure that boilers are operating within normal parameters.
Analyze problems and take appropriate action to ensure continuous and reliable operation of equipment and systems
Adjust controls and/or valves on equipment to regulate and set operations of systems
Isolate equipment mechanically and electrically to allow for safe inspection and repair work (Lock Out Tag Out)
Keep the Utilities Chief Engineer informed of operating conditions
Support company fundamentals of Safety, Appearance, Compliance, Quality and Cost
Ensure that company and recognized industrial safe practices are followed at all times
Complete employee safety and equipment audits as assigned.
Perform other duties as requested or required
Formal Education / Certification Requirements
Commonwealth of Massachusetts Third Class Engineers License
3+ years of experience working with high pressure boilers and related equipment
Must obtain Grade 3M or higher Municipal Wastewater License within 12 months of start date

Physical Requirements / Working Environment and Conditions
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Tasks may take place in both extreme cold and extreme hot work environments. Periodic potential exposures to hazardous chemicals/conditions exist in this position and training is mandatory. The work schedule may periodically rotate and includes duties on holidays and weekends. Employees reporting to this position serve in an on-call 24-hour capacity and if necessary this manager must be available to respond to operational issues across a multi-shift organization. Uniforms are provided and as well as footwear allowance.
Schedule:
Day shift 6 am - 6 pm; Night shift 6 pm - 6 am
Two week rotating schedule:
Week 1: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday (48 hours)
Week 2: Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday (36 hours)
