Upholstery Sewer/Fabricator Assembler

Regular, Full-Time; Non-Exempt

Piedmont, SC.


Summary

The Sewer/ Assembler will draw, cut, stitch, and sew a variety of materials, including fiberglass, in the design of military aircraft parts. Utilize bolts, screws, clips and fasteners to assemble simple and repetitive assemblies of military aircraft parts and components.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Under minimal to no supervision, must be able to perform a variety of job duties including, but not limited to: 


  • Use sewing machines to stitch fabrics, netting and plasticized matting and other woven materials.
  • Follow work instructions, blueprints and approved sample to ensure that all quality tolerances are met or exceeded.
  • Inspect and measure first piece, last piece, and intermittent pieces of each bundle of goods processed to verify conformance.
  • Follows specifications on blueprints to draw, cut and stitch materials used in the design of military aircraft parts and subparts.
  • Ability to work with fiberglass.
  • Performs assemblies of parts or components.
  • Installs and assembles fabricated parts and hardware assemblies according to blueprints, sketches, schematics, or other visual aids.
  • Works with various types of materials to develop, design and install various components to aircraft, satellites, or other aerospace equipment.
  • Makes any necessary adjustments or modifications to ensure that the attachment is durable and solid and will work under the extreme conditions as specified in the blueprint.
  • Reading and understanding design prints or detailed diagrams for fabrication.
  • Molding, forming, heating and curing the item according to specifications outlined by the engineers.
  • Modifying of the fabricated part as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education and Experience


  • High School Degree or General Education Degree; or 3-5 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Previous experience in aviation, aerospace and/or manufacturing experience desired


Required Skills:

  • Language: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply a general understanding to carry out detailed, written and oral instructions. Ability to deal with and solve problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Mathematical Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Other Abilities: Must be able to use shop tools, handbooks, tables, and charts. Must have proficiency in using precision measuring instruments, such as calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, tape measure, indicators, etc. Must be able to read and interrupt detailed blueprints, drawings, and work orders. Must be detail-oriented to accurately prepare statistical reports and technical documents in support of company objectives. Must have the ability to design patterns and templates from sample. Must be able to work with fiberglass. 

Physical Demands/ Work Environment:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to sit and stand 6 to 8 hours a day. Must be able to work with their hands, arms and be extremely accurate. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. May use a band, panel, table and radial saws; hand held, table and overhead routers; hand and belt sanders; hand and power shears, hydraulic and pneumatic presses.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving high-speed machinery and mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fiberglass, paints, solvents, grease, cutting fluids, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
