Our Client has a permanent (direct hire) position for a tool maker in Auburn Hills. This is a large tier one supplier with great benefis.
JOB SUMMARY:
Build tooling (and related prototypes) according to specifications for application in assembly operations. Operation of hand and power tools, general assembly of equipment, fabricating and/or modifying details. Troubleshoot or define problems with equipment and tooling. Duties are performed with oversight and prioritization by the department manager.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participates in brainstorming and other creative activities to conceive solutions to vexing problems.
- Examine specifications such as blueprints, MBD models, etc., for which tooling is to be built. Experience with AutoCad or SolidWorks preferred.
- Compute dimensions, plan layout and determine assembly method and sequence of operations.
- Set up and operate variety of machines (lathes, Bridgeport, grinder, etc.) and shop equipment to cut, shape, and finish materials to specified dimensions.
- Fabricate and weld to produce or assemble tooling components.
- Fit, align, and assemble tooling/machine components, and measure tooling/machine assembly for conformance to specifications, using precision measuring and checking instruments
- Join assembly components, using bolts, pins, clamps, screws, rivets, or other method.
- Repair or rework tools.
- Research, develop, and design assembly processes and equipment; applying knowledge of product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling, and materials; conferring with equipment vendors; testing proposed assembly methods and equipment; soliciting observations from operators, etc.
- Test and calibrate parts and mechanisms to meet tolerances and product specifications.
- Identify units that fail tests or tolerance levels and repair as necessary.
- Track assigned build deliverables including outsourced components, purchased components, in-house component builds, and final product deliveries.
- Interface with customers and vendors as necessary.
- Provide detailed written input for design reviews, proposals, specifications, work standards, and business processes.
- Communicate with Shop Manager as to progress of build project.
- Iterate designs until acceptance metrics are met.
- Teach and share best practices to continuously improve all areas of the business.
- May draw sketches and prepare detailed instructions for fabricating or machining to be performed by other team members.
- May make continuous improvement suggestions and participate in initiatives to improve productivity and process efficiency.
- Promote health and safety in all phases of innovation, engineering and launch.
- Maintain safe operations and a clean work area by adhering to safety and housekeeping procedures/regulations.
- Actively leads problem solving analysis and developing irreversible corrective actions on quality issues.
- Represent company in a professional manner with customers and suppliers at all levels of the organization.
- Maintain design records by filing documents; updating design database.
- Protect organization value by keeping information confidential; cautioning others regarding potential breaches.
- Teach, lead and continuously improve all areas of the business.
- Complete all necessary forms, documents and reports within a timely fashion, as required by quality management system.
- Assist in maintaining predetermined inventory levels of components, supplies, materials, etc., in the build shop.
- All other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Years of experience: 2+ years of prototype, tooling, or machine building experience in the automotive industry. Any pneumatic or electrical experience is a plus.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- General understanding of assembly processes, operations (sequencing, sub-assembly, shipping and receiving, and tooling).
- High level of analytical ability and problem-solving skills where problems are unusual and difficult.
- “Let’s try it” Personality – Intuitively connects ideas to ideas.
- Computer literacy in CAD systems, specifically Solidworks, AutoCAD.
- Basic skills in using Microsoft Office Windows, Word, Excel, etc.
- Must be able to fluently read blue prints and assemble tooling to a print.
- Experienced with operating power tools: hand drill, angle grinder, Metabo, chop saw, horizontal band saw, drill press, MIG Welder, Bridgeport, Mills, Lathes, CNC; TIG welding a plus.
- Skilled in welding, machining, drilling and tapping, and general assembly of equipment.
- Must be able to markup existing prints to reflect “as built” conditions.
- Must be able to trouble shoot issues while building and able to recognize when a tool cannot be built to print or is not machined or built to print.
- Must be able to machine parts from a print.
- Must be capable of fabricating weldments and machining details from a print.
- Must be able to improvise and build tooling and machine details “on the fly” without prints, but rather working from verbal directions or hand sketches.
- Must be able to trouble shoot newly built tools, debug problems and resolve issues with limited direction.
- Will be required to clean his work area daily at the end of his shift, this includes putting away all unused materials, i.e. fasteners, raw material, project books, etc.
- Must be able to work alone with minimal direction, while working responsibly, safely, and efficiently.
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Strong verbal and written skills necessary to communicate intricate job-related information and respond to questions from team members and customers.
- Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Ability to use personal protective equipment and follow safety guidelines.
- Ability to work well in a team environment and have a positive attitude.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and personal vehicle.
