Job Summary
This Apprentice position works in a learning environment to obtain the skills to do construction and maintenance on sheet metal tooling, fixtures, and gauging. The deliverable is a high level of safety and quality in regards to banking and forming dies for sheet metal production.
Essential Functions
- Ability to work overtime hours as needed which may require a 9 or 10 hour working day and an occasional Saturday
- Ability to learn the setup and operation of mills, lathes, saws, grinders, drills and other related tool and die equipment.
- Ability to learn operation of the CNC Vertical Machining Center
- Ability to read precise measuring equipment (micrometers, dial calipers, indicators, gauges) with tight tolerances.
- Ability to learn details to determine which tool steels for various projects
- Must have good trouble-shooting abilities
- Must be able to communicate with production personnel regarding tooling performance issues
- Ability to purchase a wide variety of hand tools and measuring tools to use on the job
- Ability to learn details of the heat treating process
- Responsible to log work done on dies and molds
- Responsible for recording hours and working on different equipment to meet the required hours per the CTB Tool & Die Apprenticeship Program
- Ability to meet specific deadlines on projects
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Participates in the department 5S program
- Other marginal duties as assigned by Supervisor
- Must be able to perform all physical requirements
Minimum Required Qualifications
Education: High school degree or GED or equivalent factory experience
Experience: Candidate must possess the following: Prior factory or Tool & Die experience required
- This position requires a strong focus on safety.
- Ability to read, write, and do basic math in English
- Ability to read and understand advanced prints
- Must have a good mechanical aptitude
- Participate in the 8000 hours on the job training and the designated Ivy Tech curriculum per the CTB Tool & Die Apprenticeship Program
- Ability to pay attention to detail
- Forklift license and overhead crane license required
- Must be able to carry out detailed written or oral instruction
Working conditions
- Works in manufacturing environment that can be hot, noisy, oily/grease and dusty at times.
- PPE required (such as long pants and shirts, steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, hard hat, hearing protection, gloves)
- Ability to work around moving mechanical equipment
- Willing to work with cleaning solvents and degreasers
