JOB SUMMARY

Fabricates, modifies and repairs tools, jigs, fixtures, punches, dies, molds, gauges, templates, and proficiently operates all related machinery associated with the aforementioned tasks. Performs machine development, prototype and production parts modifications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reads and interprets blueprints and creates tools to be used in manufacturing.
  • Creates, inspects and sets up tools and die equipment.
  • Reviews and verifies dimensions, alignments and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications using measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, gauge blocks and dial indicators.
  • Designs tooling, fixtures, mechanism and experimental parts by discussing specifications to meet manufacturing needs with Quality and Operations.
  • Creates prototype parts to be used in manufacturing.
  • Creates molds from scratch to be used in manufacturing.
  • Sets up and operates various metalworking machinery such as lathes, drill presses, milling machines and grinders to cut, bore, grind or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions, finishes and specifications in a timely manner. Files, grind, shims and adjusts different parts to properly fit them together.
  • Operates surface grinders to perform polishing and stoning.
  • Works from tool designs, assembly and part drawings, and sample part sketches, engineering specifications, verbal and written instructions to manufacture parts to specifications.
  • Repairs tools, jigs, fixtures, punches, dies, molds, gauges and templates. Gathers and analyzes data to determine potential problems with tooling and effectively reports findings.
  • Inspects finished dies for smoothness, contour conformity and defects.
  • Smooths and polishes flat and contoured surfaces or parts or tools using scrapers, abrasive stones, files, emery cloths or power grinders.
  • Demonstrates safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
  • Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs.
  • Stops production if unsafe parts, actions or poor-quality conditions exist.
  • Fosters continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE

  • Requires Journeyman Tool and Die Maker Journeyman certification/card and a minimum of 3 – 5 years practical tool and die maker experience in a related field.
  • Ability to operate all the machinery in the Tool Room.
  • Ability to set up and operate various metalworking machinery such as lathes, mills, drills, and precision grinding machines.
  • Knowledge of mold making a plus.
  • Ability to work with precision and close tolerances.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, use basic shop math to perform calculations.
  • Must have an understanding of CNC equipment.
  • Must be able to demonstrate ability to use various instruments such as micrometers, veneer calipers and indicators.
  • Must have strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Computer literate.
  • Must be able to accomplish tasks in a designated timely manner.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules and work orders.
  • If required to operate a fork truck, must be “certified” and have successfully completed formal training.
  • Overtime may be required and employees are expected to make the necessary arrangements to accommodate this need.
  • Given the nature of this position and the effects it has on production and manufacturing, individuals, must be able to work any shift, overtime and weekends on short notice.
