Job Description:

Summary

The Department of Music and Theatre invites applications for a Teaching Lab Specialist III to fulfill technical direction responsibilities for Iowa State University theatre productions. This position provides technical support and instruction for a wide range of theatre production activities including scenery, properties, scenic painting, and technical direction. The successful candidate will contribute to the artistic and intellectual growth of the department while ensuring the safety and quality of our productions.

This position is a 10-month appointment (August through May).


Example of Duties
• Oversees construction and scenic painting for theatre scenery.

• Collaborates with directors, designers, and technicians to create fully realized theatre productions.
• Serves as scenic designer for 1-2 productions per academic year.

• Teaches one design or technical theatre course (i.e., Scenic Design, Scenic Painting, Introduction to Technical Production) per semester.

• Leads lab courses and acts as instructor.

• Manages theatre scene shop operations, maintenance, and budgetary needs.

• Inventories and recommends purchase of equipment, supplies, and materials for theatre lab coursework and operations.

• Oversees theatrical rigging.

• Administers safety protocols.
• Instructs, trains, and evaluates student workers.

Level Guidelines
• Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISU’s mission and department or work unit goals
• Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude
• Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action
• Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices
• Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff
• May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team)
• May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist
• Provides guidance to students
