Position Summary: The Technical Materials Sourcing Specialist adds value to BAPI and Product Management by serving as a critical link between Product Management, Engineering, and Supply Chain. This role sources and qualifies new components, works closely with engineering teams to evaluate alternatives, and partners with product managers to ensure material availability aligns with new product introductions and ongoing production. The position requires strong technical acumen to interpret engineering drawings, understand component specifications, and anticipate risks in supply chain planning. A core responsibility is to streamline product completion by reducing sourcing delays, improving cost efficiency, and securing long-term supplier partnerships.

Technical Materials Sourcing Specialist Principle Responsibilities:

Technical Sourcing & Supplier Collaboration

  1. Work directly with engineering teams to identify and qualify suitable components for new and existing products.
  2. Interpret engineering drawings, BOMs, and specifications to source compliant parts.
  3. Proactively recommend alternative materials and components to improve cost, availability, and manufacturability.
  4. Support product managers in component selection decisions to ensure sourcing aligns with customer and product requirements.
  5. Evaluate suppliers on technical capabilities, quality systems, and long-term partnership potential.

Cross-Functional Product Development Support

  1. Actively participate in product development reviews, ensuring sourcing activities align with product launch timelines.
  2. Collaborate with product managers to identify critical-path materials that could delay releases and resolve issues proactively.
  3. Provide cost, lead-time, and risk assessments for proposed components during design phases.
  4. Support prototype builds by sourcing components with short lead times or alternatives when necessary.

Supply Chain Optimization & Risk Mitigation

  1. Conduct technical and market analyses to anticipate supply shortages, cost fluctuations, and obsolescence risks.
  2. Lead RFQs for key commodities, ensuring sourcing decisions are based on technical fit as well as cost.
  3. Develop dual-sourcing strategies to minimize single-supplier dependency.
  4. Partner with Quality to drive corrective action when suppliers underperform.

Professional Development & Industry Knowledge

  1. Stay current on new materials, electronics, and sensor technologies that may benefit BAPI products.
  2. Attend trade shows, webinars, and training sessions to build technical and sourcing expertise.

Requirements

Education Requirements (R/Required, P/Preferred):

(R) Bachelor’s Degree 

Degrees Preferred: Engineering, Supply Chain, or equivalent electronics/technical work experience. Business Administration with supply chain focus plus strong technical coursework or experience.


Technical Materials Sourcing Specialist Training, Skills, Knowledge and Experience 

Specific Training in this field (R/Required, P/Preferred):

  1. (R) 3–5 years in sourcing, supply chain, or procurement with a strong technical background.

Experience/Knowledge in this field (R/Required, P/Preferred): 

  1. (R) Experience in electronics manufacturing or component sourcing.
  2. (R) Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  3. (R) Demonstrated experience supporting product development projects.
  4. (R) Strong vendor management, negotiation, and risk assessment skills.
  5. (P) Experience with sensors, electronic assemblies, or PCB-level components.
  6. (P) Knowledge of regulatory or compliance requirements for electronic components.
