The following position is to join our Technology & Global Engineering team:

For more than 90 years the RTX Technology Research Center (RTRC) has operated as a multidisciplinary group of experts collaborating on groundbreaking innovations. RTRC’s Advanced Materials and Mechanics discipline is currently seeking a Technical Fellow, High Temperature Materials and Coatings. This individual will be a technical expert and thought leader on the development and implementation of material protection systems in high temperature environments including oxidation, corrosion, and thermomechanical degradation. They will be responsible for driving innovation, as well as mentoring and development of technical staff.

Recognized in the industry for Technical Expertise in the following subjects:

Thermomechanical and thermochemical modeling techniques, coatings for thermal and environmental protection of aerospace components, multi-functional materials, ceramics and ceramic matrix composites.

What You Will Do:

  • Support the development and delivery of a technical strategy in partnership with discipline and department leadership

  • Collaborate with business units (BU) to develop robust coating solutions expedited by the use of physics based modeling approaches.

  • Actively engage in technical and programmatic reviews to drive technical excellence

  • Originate and patent new ideas, define new projects, build them to self-sufficiency and guide them to transition

  • Drive funding pursuits: Lead Contract Research and Development (CRAD) pursuits and/or secure Business Unit funding to augment technology portfolio

  • Mentor, teach technical and organizational lessons to staff

  • Provide technical guidance to RTRC and BU projects and support root cause investigations

  • Enhance RTRC/RTX profile with external visibility to professional societies and develop collaborative research relationships with National labs and academia

  • Actively participate and support cross-BU Corporate technology roadmaps, BU technology strategies, Communities of Practice (COP), RTX technology networks, and RTRC discipline roadmaps and strategies

  • Publish in peer-reviewed publications and conference proceedings

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Typically requires: Ph.D. in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field with a focus on high temperature materials

  • Experience in material or coating development, with at least 8 years in aerospace and defense or other highly regulated industries

  • Ability to lead the development and integration of high temperature material or coating technologies and processes into RTX products

  • Experience applying physics based models to expedite materials development

  • Proven track record of leading and executing materials development projects

  • Strong record of publications in peer-reviewed conferences or journals

  • Direct engagement with external professional committees

  • Ability to partner with RTX Fellows and other Subject Matter Experts to identify and drive game-changing technology initiatives, operate in a multidisciplinary environment and think holistically across complex systems

  • Requires the ability to communicate with and influence senior executive leadership regarding matters of strategic importance to the product line or business

  • Ability to influence internal and external parties to accept concepts, practices and approaches

  • Recognized as a prominent expert within the field

  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access the financial management system due to government contractual requirements

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Strong understanding of material science principles, with expertise in oxidation, thermodynamics and mechanical degradation mechanisms

  • Familiarity with a wide variety of coating and composite processing methods

  • Strong engagement and recognition across external community

Education and Experience:

Typically requires: A degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 12 years prior relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree and minimum 8 years’ experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.

The salary range for this role is 160,000 USD - 322,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Hired applicants may be eligible for annual short-term and/or long-term incentive compensation programs depending on the level of the position and whether or not it is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement. Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.

This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
