Job Summary & Essential Functions
The Supplier Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring the quality and reliability of Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBAs) and electronic components sourced from external suppliers. This role drives supplier performance, oversees qualification processes, leads issue resolution, and ensures suppliers meet company expectations for quality, delivery, and continuous improvement
- Responsible for supplier management and development
- Evaluate and qualify new PCBA and electronic component suppliers using audits, capability assessments, and risk analysis
- Monitor ongoing supplier performance through KPIs (PPM, on-time delivery, corrective action response, audit scores)
- Lead supplier development projects to improve yield, reduce defects, and strengthen process controls
- Maintain approved supplier lists, quality documentation, and audit records
- Review suppliers for quality assurance and compliance
- Review supplier manufacturing processes, PCBA assembly procedures, SMT processes, and test coverage (ICT, AOI, functional test).
- Ensure supplier compliance with industry standards (IPC-A-610, IPC-A-600, ISO 9001, IATF16949 if automotive, RoHS/REACH).
- Support NPI by reviewing DFM, PPAP/FAI submissions, and control plans for PCBA builds.
- Conduct process audits and layered checks at supplier sites.
- Investigate incoming PCBA defects, returns, or failures using root-cause analysis tools
- Drive timely supplier corrective actions and verify effectiveness through data and follow-up audits
- Collaborate with engineering teams to validate design-related vs. process-related issues
- Develop and optimize incoming inspection procedures and sampling plans for PCBAs and components
- Analyze quality trends and defect data to identify systemic supplier issues
- Provide technical disposition for nonconforming materials (NCMR/MRB support
- Work closely with engineering, manufacturing, program management, and procurement teams
- Support cost‑reduction initiatives by improving supplier yields and reducing rework
- Participate in design reviews to ensure manufacturability and quality risk mitigation
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of PCB manufacturing, SMT assembly, reflow, wave soldering, conformal coating, and PCBA test processes
- Experience with quality tools (8D, FMEA, CP, MSA, SPC) and standards (IPC-A-610/600)
- Ability to read schematics, PCB layout files, and BOMs
- Excellent communication and supplier negotiation skills
- Ability to work in a high volume, high detail work environment
- Ability to travel 40%
Required Experience & Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Quality Engineering, or related technical field and 3 – 7 years of experience in Supplier Quality, Manufacturing Engineering, or PCBA process engineering (Internal candidates may be considered with proven abilities and experience)
