Superintendent - Project

Location: Upper Midwest, Central US Projects

Type: Full time

General Information/Job Summary

Plan, organize, direct and control the execution of assigned construction projects or support current projects to meet the Company’s cost, quality, equipment and material resource usage, and safety objectives Serves as the lead representative for the company at a construction site, directing and coordinating the activities of the various trade groups including Carpenters, Equipment Operators, Pipefitters, Welders, Electricians, Instrument Craftsmen, etc.

Confers with supervisory and engineering personnel, inspectors, and suppliers of tools and materials to resolve construction problems and to improve construction methods. Inspects work in progress to ensure that work conforms to specifications and that construction schedules are adhered to. Prepares, or receives from subordinates, reports on progress, materials and equipment used and costs, and adjusts work schedules as indicated by reports.

Responsibilities/Competencies

  • Assume overall responsibility for a profitable, well-constructed, safe project, completed in a timely manner
  • Overall accountability for job site safety and quality assurance/quality control procedures.
  • Requires the ability to look ahead to avoid conflicts in timing between crafts. Knowing the interactions of the tasks and how they affect each other is a skill required by the superintendent because of the conflicts that arise.
  • Must be able to deal effectively with employees and various levels of customer representatives to resolve scheduling problems, determine work priorities, and assess the relative magnitude of project requirements as they impact project scheduling.
  • Expected results from each subordinate are defined and monitored to ensure achievement relative to work output, quality of work, accidents (both to employees and to equipment) and training.
  • Spends a large portion of time monitoring daily work progress, and evaluating and counseling subordinates, requiring managerial / motivational skills.
  • Requires a general working knowledge of construction terminology and methodology without necessarily knowing the specific details of the work required from all crafts indirectly supervised. Relies upon General Foreman and/or Foreman responsible for specific craft disciplines. Writing reports and administering policies are very much a part of the daily workload.
  • Typical problem situations involve keeping current procedures, policies, and methods in use each day. Significant challenge involves responding to the time pressure exerted in an emergency. Responsible for conducting performance appraisals and recommending wage adjustments.
  • Has the authority to discipline including termination when warranted. Discipline and terminations are discussed with Management prior to taking action.
  • Requires working in operating facilities and observing and abiding by additional safety policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience managing large mechanical/piping/structural or civil construction projects
  • On a continual basis, promotes an awareness of environmental, health and safety policies to ensure a safe working environment and ensures compliance with all company policies.
  • Ability to pass drug test as mandated by the Saulsbury Industries and Department of Transportation anti-drug program
  • Must attend and successfully complete Saulsbury Industries safety training program
  • Presents safety meetings and attends specialty training as directed by management
  • Attends various training classes as may be assigned by management
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required
  • Ability to take needed safety precautions in directing the work
  • Must attend and successfully complete Supervisors Safety Training
