The Strategic Process Research Engineer/Scientist position exists to support the development and transfer of new technology from lab scale to commercialization. The position may involve acting as a technical liaison with other departments. The incumbent will be involved in strategic process development programs from the concept stage through commercialization, working closely with team members from our engineering, operations, and business teams around the world. The position is responsible for conducting hands on laboratory research, supervision of lab technicians in routine activities, support of scale-up to demonstration and commercial scales and providing technical recommendations based on results. The position will be required to function effectively on cross-functional project teams in both lead and support roles. The position is also expected to be open to learning new fields to support new projects in areas the company does not yet have expertise.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Designs and oversees or performs critical experiments. Performs and/or interprets the results of applicable analytical methods (minimum competency HPLC, GC, NMR I H and 13C) to support lab model development. Designs experiments that maximize data return for experiments during the time critical new process introduction.

  • Provides documentation of laboratory activities. Provides concise, accurate and complete reports of Laboratory experimentation.

  • Provides operations with accurate and detailed process descriptions to support the creation of manufacturing instructions.

  • Maintains laboratory notebooks to a sufficient standard to support potential IP claims.

  • Performs process development and executes scale-up of complex new products, chemistries, and equipment in existing assets.

  • Participates as part of interdisciplinary process teams to develop the final equipment specifications and/or processes for new build plants and operations.

  • Develops innovative technology that results in lower manufacturing cost or increased capacity in Evonik production plants.

  • Acts as the project manager and technical lead for projects.

  • Develops technoeconomic analysis for various process development projects to support decision-making throughout the project and to help guide the experimental plan.

  • Scopes, evaluates, and recommends purchase of lab and pilot plant equipment

  • Performs routine engineering and process safety calculations.

  • Documents the technical basis of the calculation and all key assumptions.


REQUIREMENTS

  • PhD in Chemical Engineer, Chemistry or similar field

  • 4+ years experience working in a research environment such as a pilot plant or a chemical research laboratory is a plus but not a requirement.

  • Project leadership and manufacturing experience are also a plus.

  • Reaction experience including knowledge of catalysis, heat transfer, mass transfer, mixing, and process development.

  • New product and chemistry scale-up in both batch and continuous chemical processes including a demonstrated ability to transfer technology from lab to commercial scale is desired.

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills

  • Ability to effectively lead and contribute to multi-disciplinary project teams

  • Good understanding of analytical tools and methodologies

  • Knowledge of process safety management systems and PHA methodology is a plus
