Job Overview:

**Position Summary

**

The Steel Mill Mechanic is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and rebuilding mechanical equipment used in steel manufacturing operations. This position ensures the safe and efficient operation of machinery, including rolling mills, conveyors, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, gearboxes, pumps, cranes, and other production equipment. The mechanic works closely with production and maintenance teams to minimize downtime and maintain optimal equipment performance.

**Essential Duties and Responsibilities

**

  • Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain steel mill production equipment and machinery.

  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on mechanical systems.

  • Diagnose equipment failures and determine corrective actions.

  • Install, align, and adjust machinery components such as bearings, shafts, couplings, gears, and pumps.

  • Repair and maintain hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

  • Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, schematics, and technical manuals.

  • Perform welding, cutting, grinding, and fabrication work as needed.

  • Replace worn or defective machine parts and equipment components.

  • Perform rigging and lifting operations using cranes, hoists, and other lifting devices.

  • Conduct equipment inspections and document maintenance activities.

  • Work closely with production personnel to reduce downtime and improve equipment reliability.

  • Ensure compliance with all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and environmental requirements.

  • Participate in emergency repairs and maintenance during outages and shutdowns.

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.

**Required Qualifications

**

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Technical school, trade school, or apprenticeship training preferred.

  • Minimum of 3 years of industrial mechanical maintenance experience, preferably in a steel mill, foundry, manufacturing plant, or heavy industrial environment.

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, pumps, gear drives, conveyors, and rotating equipment.

  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, and equipment manuals.

  • Experience with welding and metal fabrication preferred.

  • Knowledge of precision measurement tools and alignment techniques.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair complex machinery.

**Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in hot, dusty, noisy, and physically demanding industrial environments.

  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

**Work Environment

**

  • Heavy industrial steel manufacturing facility.

  • Exposure to heat, moving machinery, vibration, dust, grease, and noise.

  • May require rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call availability.

  • Frequent interaction with production personnel and maintenance teams.
