Description

Harmonic Drive LLC is a leading manufacturer of precision motion control equipment including precision servo actuators, planetary gearsets, and strain wave gearing components and integrated gears. We take pride in providing both standardized and customized motion control solutions to meet customer needs and ensure customer satisfaction.


Summary/Objective
We are looking for a Sr. Mechanical Designer/Drafter to design and document new gearing solutions. A proficiency in CAD design and detailing, preferably using SolidWorks, is required.


Essential Functions

  • Design electromechanical/mechanical products according to customer specifications and create internal and customer facing documentation while adhering to Company and ASME standards. 
  • Create detailed technical and assembly drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Apply GD&T appropriately to ensure manufacturability and consistency in assembly and performance.
  • Collaborate with Purchasing and Manufacturing to source vendors for component purchases
  • Create bills of materials within the ERP system as well as on assembly drawings.
  • Follow and make recommendations to improve upon Harmonic Drive’s design processes and procedures.
  • Design test and assemble fixtures according to requirements.
  • Mentor and train fellow Mechanical Designers.

Requirements

Competencies

  • Superior mechanical design and detailing experience for manufacturing including Assembly and Testing
  • Demonstrated electromechanical design creativity and pragmatic problem-solving skills, with the ability to design with manufacturing ease and cost in mind.
  • Strong engineering drawing knowledge including ASME Y14.5 GD&T practices with a clear understanding of manufacturing and inspection capabilities and limitations. 
  • Strong understanding of engineering documentation control practices.
  • Results-driven, self-directed individual with a personal commitment to excellence.
  • Knowledge of mechanical power transmission and motion control components is a plus.
  • Ability to work across teams and communicate clearly with colleagues, customers, and partners in a professional and cooperative manner.
  • Technical leadership and some project management skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information to colleagues and vendors.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple projects and daily tasks effectively.
  • Understanding of various inspection tools and methods
  • Strong computer skills (SolidWorks, Microsoft Office, ERP, etc.).

Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

  

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional, open-concept, office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers as well as electrical and environmental test equipment located in a dedicated laboratory.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time salaried position which operates Monday through Friday during normal business hours. Except when working with customers and colleagues in different countries and time zones on a limited basis.


Travel
Travel domestically and internationally, when required, up to 10% of the time.


Required Education and Experience

Associates Degree in Computer Aided-Design, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

8+ years of experience with industrial product design and detailing.

Certification in SolidWorks preferred

Certification in GD&T preferred

Knowledge of ISO 9001 and AS9100 requirements preferred
