Position Overview

We are hiring an experienced Sr. CNC Machinist for a precision machine shop in Chesapeake, VA. You will program, set up, and run CNC and manual machines to build one-off, tight-tolerance components that support the U.S. Navy submarine fleet. This is a 6-month contract-to-hire opportunity with the potential to be extended.

Every part you make here is built to print and made once. There is no repeat “widget” work and no assembly-line pace. You will machine tough materials like HY-80, HY-100, stainless steel, and Inconel, then check your own work to the thousandth. Your parts go into submarines, so your quality counts. If you want to use real machinist skills, work with Engineering and Quality, and have a clear path to a direct hire, this role is built for you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review, edit, and optimize CNC lathe and mill programs using G-code and CAM
  • Set up and operate CNC and manual lathes, mills, grinders, and saws
  • Machine complex parts from HY-80, HY-100, stainless steel, Inconel, and other submarine-grade alloys
  • Read blueprints, GD&T, and technical documents to plan and machine one-off parts
  • Inspect parts with micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and dial indicators, and record results

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 5+ years machining complex submarine, aerospace, defense, nuclear, or similar critical components
  • Proven skill programming, reviewing, or editing CNC lathe and mill programs
  • Able to run CNC and manual machines without supervision
  • Experience with multi-axis machining (4-axis or 5-axis) is a plus
  • Able to read advanced blueprints and GD&T without supervision
  • Strong shop math, including fractions, decimals, and basic trigonometry
  • Able to perform first article inspections and resolve dimensional issues
  • Skilled with precision measuring instruments
  • Open to the 2 PM-Midnight shift and some Saturdays
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and not a dual citizen of any other country

Equal opportunity employer committed to workplace diversity and inclusion.
