Position Summary
The Shop Helper provides general support throughout the structural steel fabrication shop. This is a hands-on position that assists production employees, maintains a clean and organized work environment, moves materials and equipment, and performs general shop, housekeeping, janitorial, and grounds-maintenance duties.
The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-conscious, willing to learn, and comfortable performing a variety of physical tasks in a busy industrial environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
General Shop & Production Support
- Assist welders, fitters, fabricators, and other production employees with general shop tasks.
- Move, stage, organize, and prepare materials for production.
- Assist with loading, unloading, and moving steel and other materials.
- Perform basic production tasks as directed by the Shop Foreman or Supervisor.
- Maintain tools, equipment, work areas, and materials in an organized manner.
- Assist with material handling and preparation for shipping.
- Follow all company safety procedures and instructions.
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Forklift & Material Handling
- Safely operate a forklift and other material-handling equipment when trained and authorized.
- Move steel, supplies, pallets, and other materials throughout the facility.
- Assist with loading and unloading trucks.
- Maintain awareness of pedestrians, equipment, overhead hazards, and material placement.
Grounds & General Maintenance
- Assist with basic landscaping and grounds maintenance.
- Mow, trim, weed, clean, and maintain exterior areas as needed.
- Remove leaves, debris, snow, or other materials from walkways and work areas as required.
- Assist with general building and property maintenance.
- Perform other miscellaneous tasks necessary to maintain the facility.
Physical Requirements
This position requires regular physical activity in a structural steel fabrication environment. The employee must be able to:
- Lift and carry
up to 40 pounds
independently.
- Stand and walk for extended periods and be
on their feet throughout the workday.
- Frequently bend, stoop, reach, kneel, climb, push, and pull.
- Safely navigate an active steel fabrication shop.
- Work around steel, machinery, forklifts, welding operations, and other industrial equipment.
- Perform repetitive physical tasks as required.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in a manufacturing, construction, warehouse, or steel fabrication environment is preferred but not required.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Strong work ethic and willingness to perform a variety of tasks.
- Ability and willingness to learn basic production and material-handling operations.
- Forklift experience is preferred; forklift certification/training will be provided as required.
- Must be safety-conscious and willing to follow all company safety policies.
