POSITION SUMMARY
The Shift Lead is a front-line leadership role requiring strong manufacturing knowledge within the assigned department. This position helps set the tone on the production floor by overseeing daily shift activities, supporting team members, and providing clear directions to help ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality operations. The successful Shift Lead will demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills and will collaborate with supervisors, managers, and engineering teams to drive safety, quality, and production results.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Follow plant-wide safety, ergonomics, and environmental requirements defined by Amsted Rail and outlined in the Amsted Rail Health & Safety program; provide front-line safety oversight for the assigned shift
- Lead daily safety talks for the assigned department
- Maintain working knowledge of all job functions within assigned areas
- Coordinate with essential personnel to ensure supplies and raw materials are available to support scheduled production, coordinating with maintenance, engineering, and leadership as need to support schedule
- Coach team members toward common objectives using sound motivational and corrective techniques, including recognition for quality work
- Support training, mentoring, and auditing of work to help ensure safety and quality standards are followed
- Inspect work for defects and support timely correction of quality concerns
- Assist setup personnel with changeovers, attachments, and adjustments for various production lines or cells
- Select and safely use hand and power tools
- Accurately record production run information in the company computer system
- Understand operational sequences, specifications, and finished workpiece dimensions
DEPARTMENT-SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS
- Select programs in machine control units to start operations
- Perform preventive maintenance tasks on equipment
- Troubleshot part compliance issues and equipment problems
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check
- Ability to lift, push, and pull 10 to 50 lbs.
- Ability to wear required employer-provided personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Ability to regularly stand and move throughout the department for the duration of the shift
- Mechanical aptitude required; prior industrial and front-line leadership experience preferred
