Your Opportunity as the Senior Technologist, Coffee Product Development Team
In this role you will use your understanding of food chemistry/product development to perform critical experimental work of applied research and/or development including planning experiments, generating and analyzing data, and sharing recommendations to a cross-functional team regarding formulation of new and existing products. Sr. Technologists of Product Development plan and execute a broad range of technical tasks and must be able to work effectively with support and direction from manager or within a team. Your work is typically “hands on” in a lab, in a plant or pilot plant, at a critical site, on a computer, or with consumers for all R&G coffee products.
Location: Corporate Offices in Orrville, Ohio
Work Arrangements: Ability to travel up to 30% on an ongoing basis (travel frequency dependent on projects and product launch pipeline). Hybrid role 3-4 days per week in office is expected due to nature of lab work.
In this role you will:
Formulate products based on product design briefs, claim substantiation, operational feasibility, and financial targets with direction from manager
Conduct experiments from rapid, iterative prototyping to development and scale-up (benchtop, pilot plant, plant)
Review and interpret data, from process trials, measurements from chemical/physical analysis, roasting studies, storage studies, statistical analysis, providing conclusions and recommendations
Compose new and update existing documents such as formula specifications, technical reports, project updates, data analyses, laboratory notebooks, etc.
Provide technical proficiency and direction in bringing new R&G coffee technologies to operations
Learn to integrate analytical data of green and roasted coffee to large AI models for formula flexibility
Assist as needed in providing innovative ideas leading to the creation of new products, cost savings/efficiency, and solving product related challenges
Participate in Product Science and JMP Community of Practice-Develop training and methods for Mixture Design of Experiences (DOE)
Critical partner with Green Coffee and Process Development teams to qualify new green coffee varieties
Leverage roasting chemistry acumen, green coffee knowledge and DOE’s to deliver margin improvement for our Bustelo Coffee Brand

What we are looking for:
Minimum Requirements:
MS degree in Food Science or Food Technology/Engineering with 1 year of experience in a technical field (or PhD in STEM with preference in Chemistry, Food Science, or Food Engineering)
Understanding of neural networks or AI driven machine learning with large data models
Experience with the basics of statistical design software and mixture DOE
Experience with Near-Infrared (NIR) technology for chemical analysis
Prior experience or research in roasting kinetics of food products
Passion for coffee products and roasting chemistry
Strong background in applying engineering principles & critical thinking to solve complex technical problems
Strong communication, both oral and written
Strong organizational, critical thinking, and creativity skills
Effective presentation, verbal, and written communication skills
Comfortable in ambiguous situations
Confident and proactive person open to constant learning
Can work with personal and food safety in mind
Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
