The Senior MJP Print Process Engineer will play a critical role in the development of print processes for photopolymer and wax materials on next generation MJP (Multi Jet Printer) platforms. The print process development team is part of the materials development group and plays a critical role in the integration of various system components, including hardware, software, and materials. This person will be embedded with 3D Systems hardware development teams in Wilsonville, OR and will serve as the representative of the print process group on these teams when needed.
Primary job functions:
- Conduct daily hands-on research and development with MJP printers; this is primarily an in-lab position.
- Work closely with formulation, software, jetting, and hardware development teams to develop, define, optimize, and validate parameters that create print processes to meet mechanical and visual part quality needs. This includes identifying and helping resolve issues with hardware, software, and firmware to deliver an extraordinary product to our customers.
- Interact with embedded software and process engineers to define optimum image deposition that meets part quality requirements. Develop specifications, measurement systems and calibration procedures to ensure deposition meets part quality requirements.
- Interact with formulation, software, printhead developers, and mechanical engineers to define, optimize and validate robust printhead performance (including uniformity, drop mass and jetting robustness) in printer systems.
- Identify main process parameters (inputs) and systemically study how they affect printer outputs (both quantitative and qualitative).
- Conduct formal DOE studies and statistical data analysis using tools such as JMP, Minitab, QuantumXL, etc.
- Summarize data and create reports for both technical teams and senior/executive management.
- Work safely and efficiently in a lab setting with minimal supervision.
Experience & Qualifications:
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree in a technical field required; Advanced degree is preferred with emphasis in Physics, Engineering. Mechanical/Fluids. Mechanical part design and/or color printing experience helpful.
- Hands on experimental testing; work with multi-disciplinary teams; creativity, structured problem-solving,
- 3-5 years’ experience working with photopolymer or other additive manufacturing processes, demonstrating safe and effective laboratory skills.
- Experience with jetting systems strongly preferred.
- Experience with machine vision and developing measurement systems strongly preferred.
- Functional knowledge of imaging and color science is preferred.
- Experience with Failure Analysis and Troubleshooting is required.
- Experience with Design of Experiments tools and statistical techniques especially non-parametric statistics is required.
- Experience managing a flexible daily schedule based on business demands and priorities.
- Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal and technical communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and planning skills and attention to fine detail.
- Strong commitment to both internal and external customer satisfaction.
- Proven “can do” mind set: Ability to work independently and collaboratively to deliver results.
- Normal color vision required; excellent close-up vision for tiny part inspection preferred.
