The Process and Operations Section of the Materials and Process Engineering Department is seeking an individual with technical expertise in Polymer Processes, Rheological Analyses, Polymer Compounding, Powder Feedstock Compounding, and Powder Injection Molding to support all phases of product design and production for military and defense applications.

The applicant should have a solid understanding in design for manufacturability, process selection and optimization, assessing RTX supplier capability, failure analysis and report writing, and be able to review and develop polymer and ceramic fabrication procedures, inspection processes/criteria, training of operators and inspectors, assess suppliers manufacturing processes, and perform rheological analyses. A qualified candidate should have technical knowledge and experience developing, working with, and optimizing polymer and ceramic injection molding part fabrication processes and characterization of finished parts.

This position will require frequent travel to locations within the US.

The Senior Plastic and Polymer Process Engineer job is in Andover, MA and the position is onsite.

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Typically requires Bachelor of Science Degree in Plastics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience. In absence of a degree, 9+ years of experience. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for additional years of experience

  • Experience in part development of both thermoplastic and thermoset materials.

  • Experience in compounding heavily loaded polymer-based systems for powder injection molding (PIM) feedstocks

  • Experience in PIM process development, including single and twin-screw extrusion, rubber compounding, and thermal and rheological testing

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Equivalent Part Development of thermoplastic and thermoset materials MOS: 91C (US Army), 211 (US Marine Corp), AM (Navy), MK & AMT (Coast Guard),

  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Plastics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering.

  • Strong understanding of plastics simulation software such as Moldflow, Moldex3D, or SolidWorks Plastics to de-risk potential part or mold designs.

  • Strong understanding of the principles of rheology including, but not limited to, polymer rheology and the rheological behavior of highly filled dispersions.

  • Excellent cross-functional collaboration skills, working with teams across different programs, time-zones, and functions.

  • Experience managing internal and external supplier relationships to ensure project milestones are met.

  • Experience as a technical liaison between engineering, manufacturing and quality organizations

  • Working knowledge of engineering standards for the aerospace or defense industry.

  • Ability to work as a team member and be able to mentor less experienced engineers on standards of thermoplastic or thermoset polymer manufacturing.

  • Must be adaptable and willing to work in all project phases from design concepts through manufacturing.

  • Knowledge of Design of Experiments, Six Sigma and statistical techniques.

  • Prior experience or functional knowledge of composite design and manufacturing standards.

  • Working knowledge of 2D/3D CAD software such as Creo, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Fusion 360.

The salary range for this role is 77,000 USD - 163,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
