Position: Senior Mechanical Designer
Location: Engineering Department; Engineering Design
Reports to: Technical Lead
Scope: Responsible for the successful coordination, implementation, and execution of Engineering Design projects, ensuring that all requirements, standards, and processes are met, and best practices are being utilized. Engineering Design projects include the development of new products, revised products, tools, and in-house production equipment for Victaulic and its subsidiaries, literature support and any relevant departmental needs. Coordination applies anywhere in the lifecycle of a product and includes all aspects of the product, product data, and graphical requirements.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Proficient knowledge of product design to ensure proper form, fit, and function while tolerancing to ensure economic manufacturing.
  • Prepare new drawings and perform maintenance of existing drawings. Develop design and layouts with an emphasis on new product lines.
  • Proficient/expert use of CAE software to create 3D models (e.g., part, assembly), drawings. Analyze/troubleshoot design files as needed.
  • Proficient in checking (self and others) to industry and Victaulic standards.
  • Proficient knowledge and application/or actively seeks out design for manufacturability. Application of general manufacturing processes related to product design with focus on sand castings, investment castings, forming, material removal, injection molding, compression molding, extrusions, joining, and protective coatings.
  • Proficient in research and reference of industrial standards as applicable (e.g., AISI, ASME, ASTM, DIN, ISO).
  • Application of Victaulic manufacturing processes (e.g., minimum ductile iron thickness, placement of parting lines, location of markings, preferred draft angles).
  • Proficient in developing multiple mechanical solutions for a given technical problem with minimal technical direction.
  • Works effectively with minimal guidance or supervision. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is required. Training and/or mentoring of new hires and associates.
  • Perform a variety of tasks to support the lifecycle of a product such as hands-on involvement with part and assembly verification, assisting with technical drawing inquiries, model development for rapid prototyping, marketing literature, etc.
  • Use the engineering product document management system to effectively manage design content (e.g., file, build “contains”, approval process).
  • Perform a variety of tasks to support routine operations of the department (e.g., scan drawings, import drawings, maintenance of CAE Library).
  • Actively participate in Best Practice activities including authoring departmental Best Practices and work instructions.
  • Coordinate efforts on projects that require collective participation, internal/external to the department.
  • Specific policies and procedures have been established by the Engineering Department to provide for the security and accessibility of electronic data and confidential information. It is the responsibility of the employee, in the daily course of doing business, to follow said policies as they relate to document management (see EOG-26). The extent to which departmental research and development information is stored electronically has vastly increased, and will continue to do so. The new Federal rules pertaining to electronic discovery stipulate that substantive email communications constituted "records" under the Federal Records Act. It is therefore the responsibility of each departmental employee to understand their role in communicating via e-mails and that all e-mails must be written/responded to in a professional manner, as outlined in EOG-26.
Qualifications:
  • Associates Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent work-related experience.
  • Minimum Ten to fifteen (10-15) years of design experience.
  • Extended knowledge of engineering design practices/principles (e.g., interference checks, fits, tolerance stack-up calculations/dimensional analysis, GD & T).
  • Excellent organization skills.
  • Proficient CAD skills related to the creation of 2D drawings and 3D solid and assembly models.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Understanding of a change control system.
