Who are we looking for?
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to support research and development projects within our Advanced Technology team. These high-profile initiatives are aimed at showcasing next-generation technologies through the building of prototype and demonstration products.
How will you make a difference?
As a member of the Advanced Technology group, you will be responsible for working with cross-functional teams to demonstrate future technologies. You will work with customers to help identify areas that the Advanced Technology group can help to improve customer performance metrics, support the generation of future projects and de-risk future technologies. In addition, this individual will help identify key suppliers, make location decisions, solve complex mechanical issues, and be involved with every step of the process for various R&D projects. The desired candidate will be able to handle all aspects of overseeing the design, manufacturing and testing of R&D projects. This individual will also be the bridge between external entities and the internal team.
What do we want to know about you?
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Manufacturing Engineering or a related field from an accredited University or College.
10+ years of experience in engineering.
Heavy Machinery/Industrial Experience.
Railcar, Locomotive or MOW knowledge a plus.
Field experience a plus.
Depth of knowledge in machining, welding, and assembly processes for large assemblies.
Experience leading engineering projects from design through build and testing.
Strong technical communication, problem-solving, and project management skills.
Familiarity with locomotive or rail vehicle manufacturing a plus.
Understanding of FRA/AAR rules a plus.
Ability to work well independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
Comprehensive knowledge of manufacturing techniques and processes.
Experience working with various suppliers from first contact, through onboarding, and ultimately delivery.
3D CAD experience a plus.
Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to influence, motive, coach, and drive accountability.
Willingness to travel to customers along with manufacturing and testing locations as required, up to 25% of the time.
What will your typical day look like?
Developing the designs, plans and processes for building demonstration prototypes.
Estimating production times, staffing requirements, and related costs to provide information for management decisions.
Provides input for selecting the best methods, tooling, and equipment based on the project design requirements and cost targets.
Ensures manufacturability of all prototype components and sub-assemblies.
Identifying and mitigating design and manufacturing risks.
Providing insight and technical guidance to the team during the build and test phases.
Ensuring compliance with all relevant safety and regulatory standards.
Managing the budget for all R&D activities.
Tracking progress and reporting project status.
Identify opportunities for process improvement and innovation within project framework.
Be able to communicate with key customers and discuss areas they could use to improve their performance and relate that to solutions within the Advanced Tech group.
Solving unique and complex mechanical and manufacturing related problems.
You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.

$89,100.00-$126,900.00The actual salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, education, business needs, market demands and work location.
