Position Overview 

Performance Food Group is seeking a strategic, results-driven Senior Manager of Transactional Taxes to lead key indirect tax functions in a complex, high-volume, multi-entity, multi-state environment. This role provides leadership and oversight for sales and use tax, gross receipts tax, beverage tax, bottle deposits, ancillary filings, business licenses, unclaimed property, and related transactional tax obligations. 
 
The Senior Manager will lead a team of 11 professionals, including 4 direct reports, and will be responsible for ensuring timely and accurate compliance, strengthening processes and controls, supporting audits, and driving operational improvements. This position serves as both a technical leader and people leader, partnering cross-functionally with Finance, IT, Operations, and other business stakeholders to support scalable, compliant, and efficient tax operations. 

Key Responsibilities 

Team Leadership & Development 

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of tax professionals responsible for high-volume transactional tax compliance 

  • Provide day-to-day leadership, prioritization, coaching, and accountability across assigned tax functions 

  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and professional growth 

  • Review work product, support issue resolution, and ensure appropriate escalation of risks, delays, or quality concerns 

  • Support performance management, talent development, and succession planning 

Compliance & Operational Oversight 

  • Oversee timely preparation and filing of transactional tax returns 

  • Review and approve filings, working papers, and reconciliations 

  • Drive standardization and scalability across processes and companies 

  • Ensure deadlines and service levels are consistently met 

Audit, Risk & Controls 

  • Identify and mitigate tax risks across transactional tax processes 

  • Strengthen internal controls, documentation standards, and SOX compliance 

  • Support audits, notices, disputes, and exposure matters through timely research, documentation, and resolution 

  • Maintain audit-ready workpapers and support defensible tax position 

Technical & Advisory Leadership 

  • Serve as SME on indirect tax matters 

  • Interpret tax laws and apply to complex scenarios 

  • Oversee technical research and support defensible positions 

  • Monitor legislative developments 

Process Improvement & Technology 

  • Drive process improvements and efficiencies 

  • Support system implementations and automation 

  • Partner with IT and Finance on enhancements 

  • Promote adoption of tools and technologies 

Education & Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required 

  • CPA preferred 

  • 8+ years of progressive indirect tax experience 

  • 3–5 years of team leadership experience 

Other Qualifications 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills 

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 

  • Ability to manage competing priorities 

  • Advanced Excel skills 

  • Experience with tax engines, ERP/financial systems, and data automation tools preferred, including Vertex, SAP S/4HANA, Alteryx, Power BI, or similar platforms. 

  • Working knowledge of SOX requirements and tax research platforms 

  • Strong organizational and time management skills
