Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, based on customer needs (occasional after-hours/weekend call-outs)

Position Purpose

The Senior HVAC Service Technician provides advanced-level preventative maintenance, start-up, warranty, and repair services on light commercial and industrial air conditioning equipment, including complex and specialized systems. This role carries a strong emphasis on customer service, technical leadership, and mentorship of less-experienced technicians, and serves as a key point of escalation for difficult or unresolved service issues. This position may involve after-hours call-outs for emergency repairs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead technician on complex commercial and industrial HVAC service calls, including systems requiring advanced diagnostics or specialized expertise.
  • Service a wide variety of HVAC products and equipment, ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Read, interpret, and apply blueprints, equipment manuals, engineering specifications, and complex control schematics to diagnose and repair units.
  • Independently identify, analyze, diagnose, and repair systems and products at customer locations, including troubleshooting issues other technicians have been unable to resolve.
  • Act as a technical mentor: train, coach, and provide on-the-job guidance to junior and mid-level technicians; review their diagnostic and repair work as needed.
  • Survey customer sites for properly operating equipment, report deficiencies, and identify sales/upgrade opportunities for internal teams.
  • Perform and oversee preventative maintenance programs, site surveys, replacements, and system modifications.
  • Plan and prepare for on-site installations and repairs by examining building layouts, anticipating complications, coordinating materials, and directing coordination across trades.
  • Develop action plans for complex equipment failures, including root-cause analysis and long-term reliability recommendations.
  • Determine replacement parts required, secure materials, and complete repairs efficiently; return unused or refundable parts for credit.
  • Serve as a primary technical liaison with customers on complex accounts, including presenting findings, options, and recommendations directly to facility managers or client stakeholders.
  • Accurately document all work performed via field service reports, equipment log sheets, and other required records; review documentation from junior staff for accuracy and completeness.
  • Complete and submit all required paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Operate and properly maintain a company vehicle.
  • Provide advanced technical support to customers and internal staff, including phone/remote troubleshooting support for field teams.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and training initiatives by contributing to technical training content or seminars.
  • Stay current on industry news, codes, emerging technologies, and product-line developments; represent the company at relevant training and industry events.
  • Flexible to work overtime/weekends as necessary to meet customer requirements.
  • Willing to travel occasionally, including overnight stays as needed.
  • Conduct oneself professionally as a positive representative of the company to customers and the public.

Knowledge / Experience / Critical Skills

  • Associate's Degree or equivalent from a Technical/Trade School with a certificate in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning; Bachelor's degree a plus.
  • Minimum of eight (8) to ten (10) years of related HVAC service experience, including demonstrated experience with complex commercial/industrial systems.
  • Proven experience mentoring, training, or informally leading other technicians.
  • Strong working knowledge of computers, Microsoft Office software, and building automation/control systems.
  • Advanced ability to read, interpret, and communicate complex technical information, both verbally and in writing, to customers, staff, and management.
  • Strong quantitative skills: ability to perform advanced calculations (rates, ratios, percentages, load calculations) and interpret technical/graphical data.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify root causes of recurring or complex problems and develop cost-effective, long-term solutions.
  • Must pass pre-hire requirements including background check, motor vehicle report, and drug screening.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Must possess EPA-mandated Universal certification for refrigerant handling.
  • Additional certifications preferred (e.g., NATE certification, manufacturer-specific certifications, controls/BAS certifications).

Physical Demands

The employee is regularly required to stand, use hands (finger/grasp/handle/feel), talk, and hear. Frequently required to walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl; occasionally required to sit. Must regularly lift/move up to 10 lbs, frequently lift/move up to 50 lbs, and occasionally lift/move up to 75 lbs. Requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

This position requires frequent work outdoors, inside mechanical/equipment rooms, and in possible extreme weather conditions. Regular exposure to live voltage, moving mechanical parts, and heavy equipment. Frequent exposure to wet/humid conditions, elevated/precarious work areas, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. Occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, and extreme heat. Noise level in the work environment is typically loud.
