Job Description

Job Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Project Engineer to support the construction, commissioning, and startup of a new greenfield steel mill in Apple Grove, West Virginia. This individual will provide senior-level electrical engineering leadership as the site transitions from construction and equipment installation into commissioning and production.

The engineer will work closely with the site project team, electrical contractors, equipment suppliers, systems integrators, operations personnel, and junior engineers. This is a field-focused position requiring someone who can troubleshoot equipment, review electrical designs, coordinate contractors, and make sound technical decisions in an active construction and commissioning environment.

This is not strictly a PLC programming position. The ideal candidate will bring a broad combination of industrial power, controls, automation, project execution, and commissioning experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the installation, testing, commissioning, and startup of electrical equipment and production systems.
  • Provide engineering oversight for high- and low-voltage power-distribution systems.
  • Support substations, switchgear, transformers, motor control centers, motors, and other industrial electrical infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, controls, instrumentation, and equipment-integration issues during commissioning.
  • Review electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, schematics, equipment specifications, cable schedules, and vendor submittals.
  • Coordinate electrical contractors, equipment suppliers, OEMs, and systems integrators.
  • Support PLC-controlled equipment, VFDs, motor controls, instrumentation, and Level 1 automation systems.
  • Verify that installed equipment meets project drawings, technical specifications, applicable codes, and site standards.
  • Participate in equipment checkout, loop checks, functional testing, energization, startup, and operational turnover.
  • Identify field conflicts and develop practical solutions that keep construction and commissioning activities moving.
  • Assist with punch-list development, issue tracking, documentation, and final system acceptance.
  • Work directly with operations and maintenance personnel to ensure systems are safe, reliable, and maintainable.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to entry-level and early-career engineers.
  • Promote safe work practices throughout construction, commissioning, and startup activities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • At least 10 years of electrical engineering experience in steel, metals, manufacturing, or another heavy-industrial environment.
  • Strong experience with industrial high- and low-voltage power distribution.
  • Working knowledge of MCCs, motors, VFDs, motor controls, PLC systems, instrumentation, and industrial automation.
  • Experience supporting equipment installation, commissioning, startup, and field troubleshooting.
  • Ability to interpret electrical drawings, specifications, schematics, and vendor documentation.
  • Experience coordinating contractors, OEMs, consultants, and systems integrators.
  • Ability to work independently and make timely engineering decisions in the field.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Willingness to work on-site in Apple Grove, West Virginia.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a senior, hands-on electrical engineer who is equally comfortable reviewing drawings in an office and troubleshooting equipment in the field. This person should be able to move between power distribution, controls, instrumentation, automation, contractor coordination, and commissioning activities without losing sight of safety, schedule, quality, and operational reliability.

The successful candidate will serve as an experienced technical resource for a growing engineering team and help guide critical systems from installation through successful startup and turnover.
