Position Overview:
The CNC Lathe Machinist is responsible for programming, setup, operation, and inspection of precision-machined components used in custom conveyor systems, automation equipment, and material handling machinery.
The ideal candidate will have extensive CNC lathe experience, strong G-code programming skills, and the ability to independently manufacture low-volume and custom parts from engineering drawings while maintaining the highest quality standards.
MAJOR DUTIES:
The responsibilities of the CNC Lathe Machinist include, but are not limited to, the following:
Program, set up, and operate CNC lathes to manufacture precision components
Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, tolerances, and manufacturing documentation
Create, edit, prove out, and optimize G-code programs as required
Select tooling, workholding, speeds, and feeds to maximize efficiency and quality
Perform machine setups, first-piece inspections, and in-process checks
Inspect finished components using precision measuring instruments and verify conformance to specifications
Hold close tolerances and maintain consistent part quality across custom and low-volume work
Troubleshoot machining issues, tooling problems, and part-quality concerns; recommend corrective actions
Maintain accurate production, setup, and inspection records as required
Perform routine machine care and keep the work area clean, organized, and safe
Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, and Manufacturing teams to improve machining processes
Follow all company safety policies, quality procedures, and manufacturing standards
Key Result Areas:
Deliver precision-machined components that meet drawing specifications and quality standards
Support project schedules by completing machined parts on time
Minimize scrap, rework, and machine downtime
Foster a positive, team-based culture within the department
Job Requirements:
10+ years of CNC lathe machining experience
Strong proficiency in G-code programming, editing, and troubleshooting
Ability to independently set up, operate, and troubleshoot CNC lathes
Experience machining a variety of materials such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and plastics
Proficient in reading and interpreting mechanical drawings, tolerances, and GD&T callouts
Advanced knowledge of machining practices, tooling, cutting parameters, and part inspection
Proficient using micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, dial indicators, and other precision inspection equipment
Strong attention to detail with a consistent commitment to quality and accuracy
Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision
Strong problem-solving, organization, and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with Haas CNC controls
Experience operating a Haas ST-Series lathe or similar CNC turning center
Y-axis machining experience
Live tooling experience
Experience machining custom, low-volume, high-mix production parts
Familiarity with ERP or manufacturing management systems
Forklift or overhead crane experience is a plus
Safety:
Ensure all applicable regulatory and safety standards are met, including OSHA compliance
Follow Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and machine operating procedures
Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area
Actively participate in improving plant safety
Continuous Improvement:
Participate in Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives, including 5S and Kaizen events
Support root cause investigations and corrective actions for quality issues
Recommend improvements to machining processes, setups, and cycle times
