The Company

J.J. McDonnell was founded in 1945 and was originally located in the downtown Baltimore Seafood Market. In 1984, J.J. McDonnell relocated its operations to the Maryland Seafood Market in Jessup, Maryland. In October of 2016 J.J. McDonnell moved into a larger facility in Elkridge, Maryland, where we currently reside. J.J. McDonnell has established a market leadership position in Maryland, Washington D.C, and Northern Virginia as a provider of high-quality seafood products and services.

Over the years, the product focus has transitioned from predominately fresh fish to a healthy mix of fresh and frozen seafood. We cater to a wide range of customers, from Retail to Bar & Grill, Sushi to American Steakhouse, or from small ‘Mom and Pop’ stores to a large National Chain.

The Opportunity

This position is responsible for overall daily sanitation needs for the company.

Responsibilities

The Sanitation Associate key responsibilities include:

• Maintaining high levels of sanitation by accurately and efficiently completing cleaning assignments.
• Demonstrates appropriate work habits, behavior, and communication skills always. 
• Routine Tasks:
• Disassemble, clean, sanitize, and reassemble all equipment as needed.
• Perform basic preventive maintenance of gaskets, seals and other equipment on all product contact surfaces as needed.
• Perform basic housekeeping including cleaning floors, walls, ceiling, air vents, and lights.
• Operate cleaning tools and sanitize equipment, operate motorized pallet jacks and forklifts for lifting, dumping, transporting, and setting the trash cans or dumpsters down.
• Use approved chemicals to disinfect surfaces.
• Dispose of waste, deep clean floor, drains, and other structures. 
• Cleaning ice totes, carts, bins, and racks.
• Refill soap and hand towels in the bathrooms. 
• Assist in inventory of chemicals and PPE.
• Completion of daily sanitation sheets.
• Assist in completion of master cleaning sheets.
• Monitor daily pallet and recycling trailers.
• Perform special projects, as needed per the business needs (audits, etc.).
• Perform duties of the Lead during the day when other managers are on vacation. 
• Report on potential issues to management.
• Ability to work different shifts, as required to meet business demands and needs. 
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor, as needed. 

Reporting Relationship

The Sanitation Associate reports to the Sanitation Supervisor.

Education and Certifications

• High School Diploma 
• Completed HACCP training program with certificate – a plus but not required.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

• One year of experience working in a food manufacturing environment.
• Able to present HACCP information and respond to questions from employees, customers, and governmental agencies.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Excellent problem solving and organizational skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
• Must be able to read and write in English. Able to speak Spanish a plus but not required.
• Able to read and understand Safety Data Sheet, chemical usage instruction.
• Able to transfer attention from one task to another frequently without affecting performance.
• Must have great attention to detail.
• Proficiency with sanitation and cleaning requirements.
• Ability to work on own with minimal supervision.
• Must have a positive attitude.

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee works mostly indoors in the warehouse and on occasion outside for brief periods of time. The employee can be exposed to wet and/or humid, hot, cold, and snow conditions, fumes or airborne particles and vibration.

• The performance of this position may routinely require exposure to the manufacturing areas where personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, hearing protection, hair nets and gloves may be mandatory.
