Overview

Job Summary

The Principal Scientist has responsibilities to develop new products for the Personal Care category to enact improvements on existing personal care and skin care products and to help drive innovation. This individual will closely work with other functions within Melaleuca and external partners to identify new technologies and deliver superior products that delight consumers while meeting safety and regulatory requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Leads and supports bench top/pilot line development of new products and line extensions from concept to commercialization. Responsible for leading development and launch of skin care, hair care and other personal care products
• Formula development and optimization of personal care products, including skin care, hair care products; meet technical targets in efficacy, safety, cost and regulatory requirement
• Manages external contract manufacturers: supplier qualification, capability development and technical specification
• Manages external studies, including FDA required in vitro and in vivo studies and claims support clinical studies
• Test and recommend alternative ingredients and/or processes that would improve product quality and/or process efficiency; optimize existing product formulas for cost savings and quality
• Keep up to date on new ingredient, trends and process technologies and be able to write specifications for new ingredients and finished goods
• Evaluate data from testing or literature and report outcome to cross functional teams; identify and communicate issues/risks
• Coordinate/communicate with Execution Team to ensure production start-up
• Works closely with Marketing in setting product direction, establishing priorities, and recommending new development ideas

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

A successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to formulate, develop and commercialize new and existing products; lead projects and coordinate the efforts of the various groups involved in the New Product Development process including marketing, suppliers, operations, quality assurance and manufacturing.

• Bachelors or Masters Degree in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Science or similar field
• Experience and developing personal care product development: sourcing & supply chain, regulation, formulation, stability, technology transfer
• Experience and understanding of sensory testing, shelf life testing, analytical methods and statistical analysis
• Familiar with formulation, ingredient functionality and processing of multiple product forms: emulsions, lotions, liquids, oil, spray, gel, wax,
• Global regulatory and QA knowledge preferred
• Able to travel (US & Canada)
• Proven track record of driving innovation in a competitive industry within a fast paced research environment as evidenced by new product introductions, patents, publications and/or novel product claims.
• Strong team player with excellent communication skills, flexibility, and the ability to multitask.
• Familiarity with good manufacturing practices, product registration and labeling compliance regulations, etc.
• Ability to hold product research and development activities in strictest confidence.
