Job Description
The Routing Manager is responsible for strategic management, optimization, analysis, and continuous improvement of fleet routing operations. This role combines leadership, routing analytics, transportation planning, and operational execution to ensure efficient delivery performance, cost control, customer service excellence, and regulatory compliance. The Routing Manager oversees routing processes, develops and maintains route optimization strategies, analyzes transportation data and key performance indicators, and leverages routing software systems to drive continuous improvement.
This position partners closely with Transportation, Warehouse Operations, Sales, Customer Service, and Drivers to optimize route performance, improve asset utilization, reduce transportation costs, and enhance customer satisfaction. The Routing Manager serves as both leader and subject matter expert, providing operational guidance, analytical support, and strategic recommendations to improve network efficiency and service levels.
The Routing Manager functions as a leader and team member within the department and organization, as required, and performs other duties as assigned to best serve the company.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Manage and develop routing personnel through staffing, training, coaching, performance management, and problem resolution.
- Establish performance expectations and accountability measures for routing team members.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement, safety, accuracy, and customer focus.
- Serve as the primary routing subject matter expert for internal stakeholders.
Routing Strategy and Optimization- Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of delivery routes to maximize efficiency and service performance.
- Analyze routing structures and recommend changes that improve route density, fleet utilization, labor productivity, and delivery service levels.
- Ensure transportation and labor expenses remain within budgeted guidelines while maintaining customer service expectations.
- Develop and implement long-term routing strategies that support business growth, customer acquisition, and geographic expansion.
- Evaluate route performance and identify opportunities to reduce miles driven, service time, overtime, and delivery costs.
- Conduct route balancing and territory reviews to optimize driver workload and operational efficiency.
Transportation Analytics and Reporting- Analyze transportation, routing, labor, and customer service data to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
- Monitor key metrics including:
- Cost per stop
- Cost per mile
- Route profitability
- Delivery productivity
- On-time delivery performance
- Route adherence
- Driver productivity
- Conduct weekly, monthly, and quarterly business reviews with Transportation leadership and Sales to evaluate routing performance and identify corrective actions.
Ensure routing systems are maintained daily, including:
- Geo-coding accuracy
- Delivery schedules and designated delivery days
- Customer time windows
- Service time types and overrides
- Account classifications
- Break scheduling and meal periods
- Customer-specific delivery requirements
Route Configuration- Route start and end times
- Pre-trip and post-trip allowances
- Depot assignments
- Driver assignments
- Vehicle assignments
- Mapping and route visualization settings
- DOT compliance requirements
- Road restrictions and vehicle limitations
Operational Support- Partner closely with Transportation Management to address route concerns and operational challenges.
- Conduct field visits and route ride-alongs to evaluate route effectiveness and identify improvement opportunities.
- Review customer service issues related to routing and implement corrective actions.
- Collaborate with Sales and Customer Service on customer onboarding, delivery requirement changes, and service expectations.
- Support network redesign initiatives, facility expansions, and business growth projects.
Compliance and Safety- Ensure all routing activities comply with Federal DOT regulations, Hours of Service requirements, and company policies.
- Support transportation safety initiatives through route design, scheduling practices, and operational planning.
- Ensure routing decisions support safe driving practices and realistic route expectations.
- Maintain compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
Continuous Improvement- Lead transportation and routing improvement initiatives focused on reducing costs, improving service, and increasing operational efficiency.
- Utilize data analysis and industry best practices to drive process improvements.
- Identify and implement technology enhancements that improve routing accuracy and performance.
- Monitor industry trends and emerging technologies related to routing, transportation, and logistics optimization.

Required Qualifications
High School Diploma/GED or Equivalent Experience
1 – 3 years of distribution, logistics, transportation or related work experience.
1-2 years of LEadership experince. Basic/Intermediate computer skills including various software applications and MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
Preferred Qualifications
5+ years of transportation, routing, logistics, or fleet management experience. 3+ years of leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
Advanced experience with routing and transportation optimization software (Roadnet preferred).
Experience analyzing transportation and operational performance metrics.
Experience developing budgets, forecasts, and operational improvement plans.
