Job Summary

A Rolling Mill Operator sets up, operates, or tends machines to roll steel. They shape materials into precise bends, rolls, or plates, and manipulate the metal to flatten, temper, or reduce its gauge. Their primary focus is to control the heavy machinery that transforms raw metal blocks into finished or semi-finished structural shapes while maintaining strict thickness and quality standards.

Essential Job Functions

· Monitors machine cycles and mill operation to detect jamming and to ensure that products conform to specifications

· Load steel slabs, plates, or coils into the machine and manage the flow of material through the rolling process.

· Examines, inspects, and measures raw materials and finished products to verify conformance to specifications.

· Reads rolling orders, blueprints, and mill schedules, and position and lock rolls, guides, and mandrels to determine setup specifications, work sequences, product dimensions, and installation procedures

· Manipulates controls and observes dial indicators to monitor, adjust, and regulate speeds rolling mills to shape steel, reduce material thickness, or alter the mechanical properties (tempering) of the metal.

· Moves materials to production areas, or containers, by hand, using hoist, overhead crane and/or forklift

· Use micrometers, calipers, and gauges to measure rolled products, ensuring they strictly match thickness tolerances and structural blueprints.

· Monitor roll pressure, speed, and temperature gauges, making real-time adjustments to prevent defects like warping or cracking.

· Performs prescribed preventative maintenance on machines as required, including cleaning and lubricating machinery, replace worn rollers, and follow strict industrial safety protocols (PPE, lockout/tagout)

· Completes cross-training on different machines in the area as required by supervision

· Trains other teammates as required by supervision

· Maintains the work area and equipment in a clean orderly condition in accordance with 5S protocol and follows prescribed standard procedures and safety regulations

· Performs related duties as assigned by supervision

Required/Preferred Education and Experience

· High school diploma or GED equivalent is typically required. Vocational or technical training in manufacturing processes is highly valued.

· 12 months experience operating industrial machinery and reading technical blueprints, diagrams, or work specifications.

· Experience using precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges) and standard hand tools

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

· Ability of operating heavy machinery of raw materials, thermal behaviors of key manufacturing processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods

· Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance

· Able to work independently and with other teammates in the organization to achieve goal

· Able to identify complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions

· Skilled in oral and written communication, organization and coordination

· Forklift license preferred

· Basic computer skills

Physical Requirements

The employees in this position must be able to stand continuously (5.01 hours and over/day), walk and bend/stoop frequently (25 min to 2.5 hours/day). The employee must be able to push/pull up to 75 pounds frequently. The employee must be able to quickly respond (with the hand, finger, or foot) to a signal (sound, light, picture) when it appears. The employee must be able to keep his/her hand and arm steady while moving his/her arm or while holding his/her arm and hand in one position. The employee must be able to quickly move his/her hand, his/her hand together with his/her arm, or his/her two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects. The employee must be able to coordinate two or more limbs (for example, two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting, standing, or lying down. The employee must be able to use his/her abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing. Employee must be able to wear hearing protection, interpret information by using visual acuity, hearing and speaking, gross and fine motor skills, and work 8 hours or more frequently.
