The Research and Development Manager is responsible for the management of research staff and development projects in support of our growing business focused on high-performance products used in roofing and waterproofing. This position will be based at our Arkadelphia, Arkansas research facility. The successful candidate will be able to work with Sales, Manufacturing, and business leadership to prioritize projects to optimize business impact. Project assignments will be challenging, complex, and demanding in nature and require a skilled leader than can motivate and manage scientists and technicians to achieve their goals.
Duties & Areas Of Responsibility:
Plan research for the development and commercialization of new technologies and product concepts that provide differentiated performance in the marketplace.
Establish fitness-for-use criteria for specific applications and reduce these to fundamental material characteristics using knowledge of structure-property-processing relationships
Prioritize and allocate resource needs to align with the business in both the short and long term, achieving a balance between product growth, productivity, business continuity, and quality initiatives.
Develop a team to deliver on the business goals, and build future leaders through thoughtful succession planning. Includes mentoring, knowledge sharing, and coaching in areas including product development, project management, data analysis, and intellectual property management.
Perform general management duties, exercising usual authority concerning staff, performance appraisals, promotions, and terminations. Ensuring safe and consistent work practices among the team.
Provides technical support to Marketing, Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Sales.
Maintain understanding and serve as a resource for internal and external customers on market-specific products, process technology, external technical community trends, and competitive intellectual property.
Produce timely project updates, develops presentations, and report out to internal and external stakeholders.
5 or more years experience in a laboratory environment (academic or industrial experience)
Bachelor of Science degree
Must be a current U.S. resident and have the legal right to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship.
Must have (and maintain) a valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record
Ability to travel as necessary (30% or more per year)
Ability to have and maintain a credit card for business-related expenses
Preferred Qualifications - Education, Experience, & Skills:
Masters or Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a BS in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with 10+ years of experience in the manufacturing or formulation of coatings, paints, resins, polymers, or similar materials, or other relevant science discipline.
Minimum of 5 years of research management experience.
Strong understanding of polymer chemistries and uses.
Excellent critical thinking, problem-solving, organizational /interpersonal skills
Experience with design of experiment methodologies (DOE).
Highly motivated and a self-starter
Must possess strong communication (written and verbal) skills
Ability to climb ladders, work with heights, and demonstrate roof applications
Must have the ability to work in outdoor conditions (including high/low temperatures, wind, dust, humidity, etc.)
Ability to drive car and travel (as necessary), without assistance
Visual acuity to inspect products & materials, read documents, computer screens, laboratory equipment, and file
Ability to hear and speak on the phone
Ability to bend, pull, and reach to perform position functions
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. (roofing products, etc.) on an occasional basis
Manual dexterity to perform data entry, filing, work with laboratory instruments, sample preparation, and physical testing related to the roofing/building materials industry.
