Summary:

The Repair Specialist III is responsible for performing advanced printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) repair and rework while serving as the technical subject matter expert for board-level repair processes. This role performs complex component replacement, advanced circuit repair, failure analysis support, engineering builds, and process improvement activities while ensuring repaired products meet IPC standards, customer specifications, and reliability requirements. 

Working closely with Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, Test Engineering, and Production leadership, the Repair Specialist III provides technical guidance, mentors Repair Specialists, supports new product introductions (NPI), and drives continuous improvement initiatives within a high-reliability electronics manufacturing environment. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Perform advanced repair and rework of printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs), including finepitch integrated circuit (IC) replacement, conductor repair, pad repair, wire adds, piggyback resistor installation, epoxy application, and complex board restoration using approved IPC repair methods. 
  • Utilize microscopes, soldering stations, hot air rework systems, and specialized repair equipment to complete precision board-level repairs while maintaining product integrity. 
  • Analyze failed assemblies to identify probable failure modes, workmanship concerns, component damage, and repair requirements prior to initiating corrective actions. 
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting of repair issues and collaborate with Engineering, Test Engineering, and Quality to determine root cause and recommend corrective actions. 
  • Support engineering builds, prototype assemblies, new product introductions (NPI), engineering change implementation, and manufacturing process validations. 
  • Read and interpret schematics, engineering drawings, assembly documentation, bills of material (BOMs), engineering change notices (ECNs), repair procedures, and customer specifications to perform complex repair activities. 
  • Inspect completed repairs to verify workmanship, solder quality, circuit integrity, component orientation, and compliance with IPC-7711/7721, IPC-A-610, and customer requirements. 
  • Maintain complete documentation of repair activities, defect history, component replacements, manufacturing transactions, and product traceability within ERP or Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES). 
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to Repair Specialists by supporting troubleshooting, standardized repair techniques, and on-the-job training.
  • Identify recurring repair trends and recommend improvements to manufacturing processes, repair methods, tooling, documentation, and product design to improve quality and reliability.
  • Maintain repair equipment, microscopes, soldering stations, and specialized tools in accordance with calibration, preventive maintenance, ESD, and safety requirements. 
  • Maintain compliance with IPC standards, customer requirements, company procedures, ESD controls, and quality management system requirements.. 

Competencies: 

  • Advanced PCB Repair & Rework: Ability to perform complex PCB repair and rework using approved IPC repair methodologies. 
  • Failure Analysis: Ability to evaluate failed assemblies and identify probable failure modes and repair requirements. 
  • Advanced Component Troubleshooting: Ability to diagnose complex board-level failures and recommend effective corrective actions. 
  • Fine-Pitch & IC Rework: Ability to perform advanced integrated circuit (IC) replacement and finepitch rework while maintaining board integrity. 
  • Circuit & Conductor Repair: Ability to perform conductor repair, pad restoration, wire modifications, and board restoration techniques. 
  • IPC Repair Standards: Advanced knowledge of IPC-7711/7721 repair methodologies and accepted repair practices. 
  • IPC Workmanship Standards: Advanced knowledge of IPC-A-610 workmanship requirements and customer quality standards. 
  • Document Interpretation: Ability to interpret schematics, Bills of Materials (BOMs), engineering drawings, ECNs, repair procedures, and customer specifications. 
  • Technical Mentorship: Ability to coach and develop Repair Specialists through technical guidance and standardized repair practices. 
  • Continuous Improvement: Ability to identify repair trends and implement improvements that enhance product quality and manufacturing reliability. 
  • Quality Inspection: Ability to verify repair quality, workmanship, and compliance with IPC and customer requirements. 
  • Material Traceability: Ability to maintain accurate repair documentation and complete product traceability. 
  • Problem Solving: Ability to analyze complex repair issues and implement effective technical solutions. 
  • Safety Awareness: Knowledge of safe work practices, ESD controls, and equipment handling procedures. • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in ERP/MES systems and electronic manufacturing documentation.


Qualifications: 

  • Education: Associate degree in Electronics Technology or a related technical field preferred. 
  • Certifications: o IPC-7711/7721 Certified IPC Specialist (CIS), or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe.- Required o IPC-A-610 Certified IPC Specialist, Preferred o IPC J-STD-001 Certification, Preferred 
  • Experience: o Minimum of four (4) years of progressive experience performing repair and rework of printed circuit board assemblies in an electronics manufacturing environment. o Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) experience strongly preferred. 

o Demonstrated experience performing advanced board-level repair, integrated circuit replacement, conductor repair, wire adds, piggyback resistor installation, epoxy application, and precision soldering. o Experience supporting engineering builds, prototype assemblies, process improvement initiatives, or failure analysis activities preferred. o Ability to read and interpret schematics, engineering drawings, repair documentation, and customer specifications. o Advanced knowledge of IPC-7711/7721, IPC-A-610, IPC J-STD-001, and electronics manufacturing processes. o Experience utilizing ERP or Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) preferred. o Strong analytical, troubleshooting, mentoring, and communication skills. 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods during the work shift. 
  • Ability to sit for extended periods when performing inspection, testing, administrative, or computer-based tasks. 
  • Ability to use hands and fingers to handle, inspect, manipulate, assemble, or operate equipment and materials. 
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand, wrist, and arm movements. 
  • Ability to reach, bend, stoop, twist, kneel, crouch, and/or climb as required. 
  • Ability to visually inspect products, components, assemblies, documentation, and computer displays with or without corrective lenses. 
  • Ability to distinguish colors, markings, symbols, and other visual indicators when required by the position. 
  • Ability to hear and communicate effectively in a manufacturing environment. 
  • Ability to safely operate tools, equipment, machinery, or material handling devices as authorized. 
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull materials and equipment up to 25 pounds. 
  • Ability to work in close proximity to production equipment, moving machinery, and material handling operations while maintaining situational awareness. 
  • Ability to wear and properly utilize required personal protective equipment (PPE) and ESD protection devices. 
  • Ability to maintain physical stamina necessary to meet production, quality, and operational requirements.

Work Environment: 

  • Work is performed within an electronics manufacturing environment and may involve exposure to moderate noise levels, fluctuating temperatures, and proximity to production equipment, soldering operations, and automated machinery. Duties may require standing, walking, bending, or repetitive motions for extended periods, as well as lifting or moving materials as job responsibilities dictate. Employees may enter clean or controlled areas and are required to follow all environmental, safety, ESD, and equipment-handling procedures. This includes the use of SMTC-provided ESD-safe items such as foot straps, wrist straps, and smocks when working in designated areas. Employees must be able to remain attentive and compliant with all operational, safety, and quality requirements while working on or near the production floor. 

Travel: 0-10% of the time based on business needs.
