Job Overview:

Work Environment, Physical Requirements & Schedule

This is a hands-on, physically active role ideal for someone who enjoys working with tools, solving mechanical problems, and seeing the results of their work firsthand. Maintenance Specialists (Railcar Repairman/Carman) spend most of their day repairing, rebuilding, and maintaining railcars in both shop and outdoor environments.

What to Expect:

  • Perform mechanical repairs, welding, fabrication, and component rebuilds throughout the shift
  • Work with hand tools, power tools, cutting torches, welders, grinders, hoists, and other shop equipment
  • Regularly climb, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, grip tools, and work from various positions to access railcar components
  • Lift and move materials and parts weighing up to 80 pounds, with frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds and regular lifting of 25-50 pounds
  • Work around moving equipment, heavy machinery, welding operations, and industrial repair activities
  • Use electronic systems to document completed repairs and maintenance

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions, including heat, humidity, cold, rain, and snow
  • Regular exposure to welding and cutting operations, noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, grease, and dirt common in an industrial railcar repair facility
  • Work at elevated heights and around large rail equipment may be required
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required and includes steel-toe boots, hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, welding shields, and other safety gear as needed

Schedule & Training:

  • Typically 8 to 10-hour shifts
  • Schedules and days off may vary based on operational needs
  • Flexibility to work days, nights, weekends, overtime, and holidays as needed
  • Successfully complete a mandatory 4-week training program upon hire
