Job Overview

This position will be awarded to the best-matched candidate with the skill and ability to meet the job requirements as determined by an interview process and an assessment process. Plant service will be the determining factor if skills and abilities are determined to be equal.

The Quality Technician is responsible for administering the plant Hold and Release program (including raw materials, packaging, and finished goods), managing the hold inspection process, and assisting in disposition. Also responsible for administering the raw material testing and approval process, aiding Business Units in quality related issues, and acting as a liaison between Quality Systems and all plant Business Units.

Job Description:

  • Provides informational input on quality issues, product attributes, and raw materials.
  • Works with plant Operations to ascertain details surrounding all Hold actions and quality related issues.
  • Initiates and facilitates root cause failure analysis process for all holds and gathers pertinent information.
  • Administers the plant hold and release process. Help to facilitate hold and release process, managing, and adjusting non-conforming product in MATRICS, including necessary reports. Physical inventories of all non-conforming product, with Q1 being daily, and Q2/Q3 being weekly.
  • Administers key elements of the HACCP process and HACCP plan Administration.
  • Communicates with Logistics and contracted storage facilities on hold issues and inbound raw materials.
  • Administration of Quality Suites throughout the plant.
  • Support the Net Content Program, by monitoring activities, performing MSAs as required, and completing Overfill Reports on a weekly basis.
  • Perform Positive Release activities daily.
  • Performs Performance Monitoring activities, as needed and scheduled, and help facilitate the Performance Monitoring Process, as needed.
  • Audits quality systems (i.e. Sanitation, GMP/Safety, Recall/Traceability, HACCP) for compliance and effectiveness. Reports all deviations and weaknesses to the Quality Systems Manager & Coordinator, Business Unit Manager and Supervisors. Makes suggestions for corrective and preventative actions and tracks progress of corrective actions. Also helps to prepare and potentially present for external and 3rd party audits.
  • Confirms CoAs of raw materials as needed, maintains a database on raw materials, and updates the Approved Ingredient List.
  • Help to monitor and update all RMAT ingredients and suppliers, for the facility.
  • Maintains supplier performance metrics in SAP and interacts with vendors on quality issues, through the notification process.
  • Understanding and auditing Facility Formula sheets for accuracy.
  • Makes decisions on quality issues as needed with consultation with QS Manager, QS Supervisor, or Sanitation Manager.
  • Help complete Complaint investigations, as required, and understanding the entire process.
  • Helping to give Quality based training to other individuals and departments, as necessary. This includes the New Hire training.
  • Attempt to improve overall plant quality via plant observations, attending training seminars, maintaining a professional relationship with managers, supervisors, and employees, and sets a good GMP example.
  • Performing Pre-Startup activities, including Clean Equipment swabs, pre and post-clean inspections.
  • Attends meetings, issues report and manages designated studies as needed.
  • Perform various tasks related to the QS Microbiology program as required.
  • Review and file Processing and Production paperwork daily.
  • Performs special assignments as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

  • Strive to maximize the efficiency of the plant/department by submitting and implementing process improvements.

Quality Responsibility:

  • Ensure the quality of our products and our workplace by following all procedures and guidelines.
  • Comply with all established GMP's, HACCP guidelines, housekeeping responsibilities and KHMS operating procedures.
  • Assist in the implementation of the KHMS program and training of new associates.

Safety Responsibility:

  • Actively participate in team safety efforts to achieve/exceed plant goals.
  • Involvement & support of Safety processes.
  • Required to perform all duties safely & use discretion to prevent injuries to self and/or others.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Food Science, or Microbiology is preferred.
  • At least three years plant experience is preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of quality systems procedures and policies is preferred.
  • Demonstrable expertise in the use of computers and standard computer programs.
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office suite of software, especially Excel, Word, Access, and Outlook a must.
  • Self-managing and ability to work well with others in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to trouble-shoot and problem solve, including skilled at-risk assessment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to travel if required

Physical/Mental Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
  • Ability to use hands/arms to reach, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls.
  • Ability to work in all areas of the facility including hot and cold areas, and be exposed to wet and humid conditions.
  • Must be able to lift and or move up to 50 lbs or more.
  • Must have excellent vision, distant and peripheral, with the ability to identify and distinguish colors, and adjust focus.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually high, and ear protection is required.
  • Work near moving mechanical parts, high and/or confining places and in outside weather conditions.
