Summary

The Quality Inspector is responsible for performing dimensional, visual, and functional inspections of aerospace components and assemblies to ensure conformance with engineering drawings, specifications, and quality system requirements. The role requires proficiency in CMM operation and programming, interpretation of complex geometric tolerances, and collaboration across manufacturing, engineering, and supplier quality functions.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities 


Under minimal to no supervision, must be able to perform a variety of job duties including, but not limited to: 

  • Perform First Article Inspection (FAI), in-process, and final inspections of machined and formed aerospace components in accordance with engineering drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Operate and program Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) using software such as PC-DMIS or Verisurf to inspect complex geometries and generate inspection reports.
  • Utilize conventional inspection equipment including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, indicators, contour templates, mylars, and form blocks.
  • Conduct receiving inspection of purchased materials to verify conformance with purchase order and contractual requirements.
  • Accurately identify, document, and process nonconforming material through NCMR/MRB systems and support disposition activities.
  • Log completed inspections and job status within the ERP system, complete associated documentation (job travelers, tags, traceability records), and release product to subsequent operations.
  • Verify pick tickets and material traceability to ensure configuration control.
  • Evaluate Returned Material Authorizations (RMA) and provide technical feedback to Quality Management for disposition.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, and external suppliers to resolve quality and manufacturability issues.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in accordance with company safety policies and quality system requirements.

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Certification in Machine Shop Technology, Blueprint Reading, and GD&T is preferred.
  • Associate Degree (A.A.S.) desired.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) preferred, particularly in a STEM-related field such as Engineering, Manufacturing, or Quality.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and relevant industry experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting engineering drawings and specifications is required.

Other Requirements

  • Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, assembly processes, and associated tooling.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing practices supporting military fixed-wing and rotary-wing platforms.
  • Proficiency in general databases and spreadsheet applications.
  • Working knowledge of CATIA V5 for component and tooling review in a 3D environment.
  • Familiarity with ANSI/ASME drawing standards and ability to verify drawing compliance.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours, overtime, and weekends as required to support production and quality objectives.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 10% to other company facilities to support inspection coverage, audit activities, or customer requirements.

Required Skills:

  • Language: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply a general understanding to carry out detailed, written, and oral instructions. Ability to deal with and solve problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Mathematical Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Other Abilities: Must be able to use shop tools, handbooks, tables, and charts. Must know proper rakes and clearances of tool bits and drills. Must have proficiency in using precision measuring instruments, such as calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, tape measure, indicators, etc. Must be able to read and interrupt detailed blueprints, drawings, and work orders. Must have proficient knowledge with the use of computers and Microsoft Suite. 

Physical Demands/ Work Environment: 

  • Ability to stand for 6–8 hours per shift and perform repetitive hand and arm movements requiring high accuracy.
  • Ability to walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl as required.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. frequently and 40 lbs. occasionally.
  • Exposure to manufacturing environments including moving machinery, cutting fluids, oils, solvents, metal shavings, fumes, vibration, and varying noise levels from moderate to loud.
