Job Summary

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS’ expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.

The Metrology Engineer develops, modifies, coordinates and documents the implementation, evaluation, and maintenance of quality assurance programs and systems on one or more mid-size projects. Provides advice and guidance in interpreting inspection data, adapting quality standards and government regulations. Collaborates with engineering and manufacturing to ensure quality standards are in place. Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires a review of identifiable factors.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Analyzes design reliability and quality to recommend process changes and enhancements.
  • Creates or recommends design, dimensional or manufacturing process changes to improve products and reduce costs.
  • Devises and implements methods and procedures for inspecting, testing and evaluating the precision and accuracy of products and production equipment.
  • Participates in functional testing and/or inspection of equipment and systems.
  • Audits quality systems for deficiency identification and correction.
  • Implements solutions to complex problems occurring internally and at vendor facilities.
  • Prepares statistical analysis reports, specifications and other technical documents.
  • Interprets and adapts quality standards and government regulations.
  • Provides limited project direction to other staff members.
  • Sets up and operates measuring and test equipment to include ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD & T).
  • Programs and operates portable coordinate metrology equipment (Laser Tracker, Portable Arm, Blue Light Scanner) to achieve part acceptance.  This includes equipment setup, assisting with machine tool coordinates & adjustments, in process inspections, final inspections and modeling “what-if” scenarios.
  • May perform incoming material/part inspection, WIP and Final inspections
  • May generate nonconformance, material rejections and corrective action reports, as well as communicating final acceptance test reports with customers.
  • May also generate and maintain files of all quality and as-built information for each product.
  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
  • Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • Additional Functions Other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering or related discipline and five or more years of related experience with a bachelor's degree or three or more years with a master's degree.
  • May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.
  • Must be able to apply a sound understanding of inspection methods and have good knowledge of computer operations and applications.
  • Must have the analytical ability required to develop creative solutions to routine and non-routine quality issues and the skills required to present those solutions to internal and external contacts.
  • Must be detail-oriented to accurately prepare statistical reports and technical documents in support of company objectives.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and specifications and perform complex mathematical computations.
  • A Subject Matter Expert level of knowledge on Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD & T)
  • Proven ability to program and operate Laser Tracker equipment (LEICA models or similar) and/portable metrology equipment to achieve part acceptance
  • Display the required level of knowledge to utilize Laser Tracker support software Programs (Spatial Analyzer, Polyworks and/or PCDMIS).
  • An intermediate to advanced level of experience with Spatial Analyzer software.
  • Must have experience with large volume weldments, fabrications, & complex machine parts.
  • The ability to work independently or in a team environment is essential. Able to work extended hours as required. 
  • Able to work in confined spaces, from ladders, and man-lifts.
  • Experience with ISO 9001, AS 9100/9102, and Department of Defense (DOD) quality assurance program requirements in a manufacturing environment are highly desirable.
  • Must have good leadership skills to direct staff members and ensure project costs and schedules are maintained.
  • Currently possessing or the ability to gain and maintain a DOD security clearance is preferred.
