Purpose
This advanced-level position is responsible for conducting routine Quality Assurance (QA) testing materials for quality and compliance within set specifications and reporting the results to appropriate personnel. This position can be responsible for either aggregate, asphalt or geology materials technician duties. May lead special projects requiring researching and recommending streamlined processes.  This position qualifies for a monthly truck allowance. You must have successfully performed and met all requirements of the Quality Assurance Technician I and II role to advance into the Quality Assurance Tech III position.  You may assume the duties of all QA Tech I, II, III roles as business needs require.
Focus & Scope
Essential duties and responsibilities, i.e. those which are basic, necessary, and an integral part of the job, are indicated below:
  1. Creates mix designs to meet project specifications.
  2. Analyzes test data to determine specifications compliance of aggregate and aggregate based products.  
  3. Monitors product performance to make correction adjustments as needed within time specifications.
  4. Provides technical information and support.
  5. Determines specification compliance of aggregate and aggregate based products.
  6. Investigates product performance problems and provides on-site contractor support.
  7. Assists project representative and agency personnel to determine contract compliance and product quality.
  8. May train, supervise and/or direct the work of lower-level employees when directed by the Supervisor.
  9. Promotes a Zero Injury culture through personal adherence to all company safety policies and practices.
Relationships, Qualifications and Requirements, & Competencies
Role Qualifications & Requirements
Education:
  • A High School diploma or G.E.D. or an equivalent combination of training, education and experience.
Experience & Industry Expertise:           
  • A minimum of five (5) or more years of related work experience. Must possess Caltrans JTCP HMA I, HMA II, or NAQT for Nevada. Certification requirement will depend on assigned location and at the direction of the Supervisor.
  • ACI Aggregate Testing Tech I, Tech II, Aggregate/Soils Base Testing Technician Certificate and NICET Certifications. Certification requirement will depend on assigned location and at the direction of the Supervisor.
  • Trained in R-Value, plasticity index, asphalt content and material evaluation usage.  Knowledge of ASTM / AASHTO test methods.
  • Advanced knowledge of aggregate testing and related technology.  Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service. 
Specific Job Requirements
  • Must possess intermediate computer software skills including Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and Stonmont QC Software.
  • Must possess mathematical ability to perform algebraic problem solving and statistical analysis.
  • Must possess knowledge of asphalt plant and asphalt placement procedures including Caltrans test methods and lab procedures.
  • Must possess knowledge of Marshall, Hveem, Caltrans Superpave and the ability to analyze and design concrete mixes with minimal input from supervisor.
  • Must demonstrate ability to sample materials with ASTM and Caltrans specifications.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to use sound judgment and discretion when meeting customer needs; to question and/or reverse decisions on finished products if the product does not meet established guidelines.
  • Must be able to prioritize and manage multiple assignments and meet tight deadlines.
  • Must possess the ability to work independently as well as maintain effective working relationships within a team environment.
  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills.  Must be able to speak and understand English at a proficient and understandable level.
  • Must possess a valid Driver License in the state you reside and work in and must maintain an acceptable driving record.

Physical Demands & Work Environment: The physical demands and work environment characteristics are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Position Description Cont.

  • Physical: Viewing of computer monitor.  Keyboarding: use of fingers to make small movements such as typing and mouse usage.  Driving to plant sites, other offices or meeting sites.  Position may require lifting of materials and equipment up to 50 lbs.  Special projects (such as breaking down geology samples) may require lifting up to 80 lbs.   May require walking on uneven ground, climbing, reaching, bending or stooping.  May be required to work outdoors for long periods of time and at varied shift levels from day to swing to night.   General use of specific tools for maintenance of equipment.
  • Work Environment: Plant locations may contain dust, fumes, debris, medium to loud levels of noise and extreme weather conditions including excessive heat or cold and rain prevalent at times.  Some time is spent in the hot plant control tower and Quality Assurance lab.  Works with and handles hot material samples.  Travel may be required to other locations, site facilities or educational seminars.  Some locations may require climbing ladders and working at elevated heights.  Typical office environment with adequate temperatures and lighting, low levels of noise.
