Position Specific Description
The Utility Scale Energy Storage team seeks a Project Engineer with a passion for renewable energy and
experience in energy storage. Responsibilities include planning, designing, and managing energy storage
projects, selecting equipment, coordinating engineering resources, supporting logistics and
construction, and consulting across teams. The role requires technical expertise, strong project
management skills, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail. You will analyze data, conduct
technical due diligence, propose storage solutions, and collaborate with internal and external
stakeholders to maximize battery energy storage system performance.
Duties & Responsibilities
• Support design phase and engineer major components for large-scale energy storage projects.
Recognize inconsistencies in engineering drawings, take corrective action, and strive for better
design quality and efficiency.
• Identify and resolve errors in engineering studies and suggest future solutions.
Prepare technical scopes of work for contracts.
• Support projects from inception to completion by working closely with project managers.
Influence project teams on engineering tasks.
• Stay updated on project progress and technical issues.
• Manage project milestones and recognize risks.
• Collaborate with suppliers to integrate major equipment.
• Work with diverse teams to solve problems, improve opportunities, and integrate systems and
controls.
• Understand specifications for major equipment purchasing, ensure clear communication, and
propose solutions.
• Understand permitting requirements, propose solutions to legal challenges, and recommend
site design improvements.
• Handle other assigned duties as needed.
• Travel 25% of the time for project specific duties.
Preferred Work Experience
• An SME in substation or utility scale energy storage design and/or project management, with
established expertise in one or more of the following areas:
o Power electronics
o Battery storage system design
o Substation design
o Generation tie design
o Data Centers
• Design and/or operation of large-scale power generation or processing plants involving
adherence to regulatory requirements while maximizing the performance and reliability of
technically complex systems
• Hands-on experience or strong knowledge of construction methods, including foundations,
trenching, electrical terminations and testing, and best safety practices
• Strong knowledge of technologies in energy storage including varying battery chemistries,
power conversion units and DC-DC converters
• Lithium-ion battery storage safety: Familiarity with UL1973, UL9540, UL9540A, NFPA 855, NFPA
70E, NEC, applicable IFC/IBC sections
• Familiarity with interconnection studies and GIA material modification adjustment (MMA)
processes, particularly in WECC and CAISO
• Construction permitting and contracting
• Shows maturity of technical expertise and assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical
objectives
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of effectively conveying technical and
non-technical concepts to diverse audiences
Educational Requirements
• Bachelor of Science in Electrical/Mechanical engineering or related field from an ABET
accredited program
• 5+ years of proven engineering experience
