Position: Project Engineer – CNG/RNG Fueling Systems

Position Summary: The Project Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and implementation of compressed natural gas (CNG) and renewable natural gas (RNG) fueling station systems. This role supports the full project lifecycle from concept and detailed engineering through installation, commissioning, and ongoing technical support. The position requires strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, industry code compliance, and hands‑on collaboration with cross‑functional teams.

Essential Functions:

  • Design mechanical systems for CNG and RNG fueling stations, including compression, storage, dispensing, and auxiliary equipment .
  • Develop and review P&IDs, general arrangement drawings, and mechanical layouts.
  • Perform equipment sizing, pressure drop calculations, and material selection. 
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes and standards (e.g., NFPA 52, ASME, API, ULs, CSA, local AHJ requirements).
  • Collaborate with electrical, controls, manufacturing, and installation teams to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Support hazard analyses, design reviews, and functional safety evaluations.
  • Provide technical support during fabrication, installation, startup, and commissioning. 
  • Interface with suppliers and customers to clarify technical requirements.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, and efficiency.

Competencies:

  • Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals (fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, materials). 
  • Experience with CNG/RNG fueling station or high‑pressure gas systems. 
  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards (NFPA 52, ASME, ASME B31.3 Piping Standards, API, CSA, CE preferred). 
  • Knowledge and experience in compressor sizing
  • Process safety awareness (HAZOP, MOC, risk analysis). 
  • Project execution and time management skills.
  • Commitment to safety and quality. 
  • Continuous improvement mindset. 
  • Effective communication and cross‑functional collaboration.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field required. 
  • PE license or Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) preferred. 
  • 3–7 years of mechanical engineering experience in fueling systems, energy, oil & gas, or industrial equipment. 
  • Experience with CNG and/or RNG systems strongly preferred.
  • Modular or platform-based system design preferred.

Additional Details and Requirements:

  • Proficiency with CAD tools and engineering documentation. 
  • Ability to interpret codes, standards, and customer specifications. 
  • Familiarity with ERP systems and engineering change processes. 
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound engineering judgment.

Work Environment: CMD is located in Appleton, WI. Our three facilities operate by secure entry, are well lit, air temperature controlled for comfort, and clean with low noise. Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and routine office equipment.
  • Physical movement is required to inspect, touch, bend, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch or twist in the capital equipment manufacturing process. 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements.
  • Light to moderate lifting may be required; lift up to 50lbs occasionally.
  • Ability to navigate manufacturing floor environment, which may include walking on uneven surfaces, climbing stairs, and standing for extended periods.
  • Capacity to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, ear protection, and hard hat as needed.
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to moderate levels of noise, vibration, and varying temperatures in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to follow health and safety guidelines and protocols including emergency procedures.
  • Regular, predictable attendance is required.

Status: Full-time, exempt. 

Travel: Up to 20%.
