Press Operator, Team Supervisor - Evening Shift

The Pioneer, part of the Hearst Michigan Newspaper Group, is now accepting applications for Press Operator, Team Supervisor at its production facility in Big Rapids. The Evening Supervisor is responsible for running the printing press as well as leading evening press operations for the printing plant. The Supervisor ensures all production tasks are completed on schedule and meet quality standards, providing leadership to a dedicated team while ensuring effective communication across departments. Hearst Michigan Newspapers prints 4 Dailies and Weeklies owned by Hearst, plus a variety of Commercial Printing. The hours for this role are 5 PM to 1 PM.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Run the printing press in a safe, quality-oriented, efficient manner.
• Supervisor of the night press, packaging, prepress and delivery team.
• Lead team and foster a productive environment on the evening shift 
• Answer questions and address problems that arise on the evening shift.
• Work with the Packaging Manager to ensure on-time delivery of printed products.
• Make phone calls if problems arise that need to be addressed.
• Produce high-quality printed products while limiting waste and wasted time
• Responsible for the quality of publications coming off the press including color, registration, page order, bundle sizes, type of paper, and everything related to the printing of the publication
• Direct and train team on quality, safe, and efficient production operation of the printing press and functions surrounding the press operation
• Coordination of production and press maintenance making sure the press is maintained to a high standard
• Repair broken items on the press, coordinate and fix with press mechanic when needed
• Accurate data gathering for all press-related functions filling out press log accurately
• Help develop and maintain a preventative press maintenance program to ensure quality operation
• Bend and install plates on the press
• Open paper, shaft rolls and get paper ready for press, placing inventory stickers for consumption, feed paper into the press for proper configuration
• Clean and maintain press and press area, toolboxes

Qualifications and Skills  

• Clamp truck certification 
• Mechanically inclined
• Supervisory experience and leadership abilities
• Excellent communication skills
• Technology competent 
• Ability to work the evening shift
• Reliable transportation
